My clients are looking for two key types of economists: Generalists who can sit alongside the trading desks and investigate ideas in detail, typically focused on rates & fx in G10 & key emerging markets. Quant-macro specialists who can model macro data and invest time in backtesting trading ideas - the importance here being economists who can model data effectively (typically in R/MatLab), rather than quants, solid economics background is sought, such as time in central banks, major institutions or other model-driven hedge funds.
