Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

NHS AfC: Band 6

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Dysphagia trained Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our acute team based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Those looking for a developmental position as a stepping stone between Band 5 and Band 6 are welcome to apply as training and support can be given to develop leadership and clinical skills.

Post graduate dysphagia training is essential due to the main caseload being patients with dysphagia, however there are also opportunities to work with patients with communication difficulties as the caseload requires.

Our team has access to videofluoroscopy and we are in the process of setting up a Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) service. You will have access to Band 7 and Band 8a clinical Speech and Language Therapists to help develop your clinical skills as well as being supported by a Band 7 Team Manager.

We have regular access to CPD both within our acute team and our wider SLT team which includes SLTs working in head and neck cancer, community hospitals, outpatients, voice, domiciliary and our local spinal injury centre. There will be opportunities to gain skills in organising and creating training, developing supervision skills, and opportunities to gain experience with instrumental swallowing assessment. Some cross site working may be required and provides an opportunity to learn from our wider acute inpatient team.

Main duties of the job

To assess, diagnose/ interpret and manage a shared specialist caseload of complex patients as an autonomous practitioner.
