Looking to Build a Career in Education or Psychology? Start Here.

Are you a recent graduate eager to gain practical experience working with young people?

Do you want to make a difference while exploring a future in teaching, educational psychology, SEN or mental health support?

A vibrant and inclusive secondary school in Birmingham is offering an exciting opportunity for a Graduate SEN Support Assistant to join their support team from September 2025. This role is ideal for graduates looking to gain real-world experience supporting students with a range of additional needs in an engaging and rewarding setting.

About the Role

As a Graduate SEN Support Assistant, you’ll work closely with pupils aged 11–16 who require additional help to access their education. This may include students with autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, or social, emotional and mental health needs.

You’ll play a vital part in helping students achieve their potential — academically, socially, and emotionally.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

* Providing in-class support to ensure students stay engaged and can access the curriculum

* Delivering small group or 1:1 interventions tailored to individual learning or behavioural needs

* Supporting the emotional wellbeing and confidence of students through positive relationships

* Assisting teachers with adapting materials to suit diverse learning styles and abilities

* Liaising with the SENCO and wider support staff to track progress and adjust strategies

This is a full-time, term-time role that offers hands-on, transferable experience across education, psychology, and child development sectors.

About the School

You’ll be joining a well-resourced, inclusive secondary school in Birmingham known for its supportive approach to both students and staff. The school prides itself on its strong SEN provision and commitment to ensuring every pupil receives the support they need to succeed.

Working as part of a collaborative and experienced SEN department, you’ll gain valuable insight into how schools meet the needs of young people facing barriers to learning.

Who This Role is Perfect For

This opportunity is well-suited to graduates who are:

* Holding a 2:1 degree or higher in Psychology, Education, English, Maths, or a related subject

* Interested in progressing into teaching, speech and language therapy, educational psychology, or youth mental health support

* Patient, empathetic, and confident working with young people from diverse backgrounds

* Able to stay calm under pressure and adapt their approach to suit individual needs

* Experienced (either professionally or voluntarily) in roles such as tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or youth work

What You’ll Gain

* First-hand experience in a secondary school SEN setting

* Mentorship and guidance from qualified teachers and SEN specialists

* Strong foundation for applications to PGCEs, psychology MScs, or therapy training programmes

* Daily opportunities to make a real impact on students’ progress and wellbeing

* A clearer understanding of the challenges and rewards of working in education
