Specialist Health Visitor – Perinatal and Infant Mental Health (PIMH)
The Specialist Health Visitor for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health (PIMH) will provide expert clinical leadership across the Families Health & Wellbeing Service (0‑19) in Staffordshire, ensuring the delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based care to infants, parents and families.
The post holder will act as a specialist resource for practitioners, leading on the development, implementation and evaluation of PIMH practice, policies and pathways. They will promote early intervention, prevention of escalation, and improved outcomes through strengthening parent‑infant relationships and supporting mental health and wellbeing from pregnancy through infancy.
The role requires autonomous practice, advanced clinical knowledge, and strong partnership working across multidisciplinary teams and agencies to deliver integrated, person‑centred care aligned with the Healthy Child Programme.
Main duties of the job
* Act as the clinical expert and lead for PIMH within the 0‑19 Service
* Provide specialist advice and support to health visitors to enable them to support families in perinatal and infant mental health
* Lead on early intervention, prevention and the promotion of healthy attachment and parent‑infant relationships
* Support delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, with a focus on transition to parenthood
* Develop and implement evidence‑based pathways, policies and best practice
* Deliver training, supervision and workforce development to build PIMH capability across teams
* Work collaboratively with midwifery, mental health services, primary care, social care and voluntary sector partners
* Use data, feedback and research to drive quality improvement and service development
Job responsibilities
* Act as the specialist lead for perinatal and infant mental health, providing expert advice, clinical guidance and support to practitioners
* Maintain clinical skills and act as a point of escalation for complex cases, demonstrating sound clinical judgement and autonomous decision‑making
* Lead the development and embedding of evidence‑based PIMH practice, ensuring alignment with NICE guidance and national policy
* Develop and implement policies, pathways and protocols across organisational and multi‑agency boundaries
* Use clinical data, audit and service‑user feedback to drive continuous quality improvement, safety and performance monitoring
* Produce reports on service activity, outcomes and impact for senior leaders and commissioners
* Provide clinical supervision, mentorship and preceptorship to staff and students; identify learning needs and support the development of a skilled, confident workforce
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Degree in Health Visiting (SCPHN)
* Completion of modules at Masters level
* Specialist qualification/knowledge or training in relation to PIMH
* Masters qualification in an area that will support the delivery of the service
* Attendance at relevant special interest groups
Experience
* Experience supporting service users, families, carers in dealing with perinatal mental health
* Ability to manage time and workload effectively
* Ability to work autonomously
* Experience in perinatal/infant mental health at a universal level
* Evidence of working in a specialist health visitor role
Knowledge
* Evidence of expert/advanced clinical knowledge relevant to the post
* Knowledge of relevant legislation, NHS processes, policies and current strategies and performance framework
