Job Summary
The Orthoptic and Optometry team at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic Optometrist to predominantly work with paediatric patients across three main sites (Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland General Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham). The role involves core paediatric optometry, multidisciplinary clinics with Paediatric Ophthalmologists and Orthoptists and opportunities for training in medical contact lenses, low vision aids and strabismus management.
Responsibilities
* Provide core paediatric optometry services, including refraction and dilated eye examinations.
* Attend multidisciplinary clinics with Paediatric Ophthalmologists and Orthoptists.
* Perform dilated retinoscopy and ophthalmic examinations on paediatric patients.
* Collaborate with team members to manage clinical care and share knowledge.
* Attend and support service training and development (medical contact lenses, low vision aids, strabismus).
* Record assessments and contribute to clinical audits.
Qualifications & Experience
* Current UK registration (Bsc Hon (Optometry) MCOptom).
* GOC Registration.
* Experience in paediatric refraction.
* Good communication, organisational and IT skills.
* Desirable: low vision aids experience, willingness to undertake training, specialist contact lens experience.
Person Specification
* Well developed hand/eye coordination, flexible, enthusiastic.
* Experience in paediatric refraction and strabismus.
* Good interpersonal skills.
Location & Salary
Darlington Memorial Hospital, University Hospital North Durham, Bishop Auckland General Hospital. Salary £38,682–£46,580 a year, permanent, part‑time.
