FIT Pharmacy Technician

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our FIT Service. This role is also open to newly qualified or less-experienced Pharmacy Technicians who will be appointed at Band 4 with development to Band 5 after training. The team plays a key role in supporting improving patient flow, and ensuring high-quality medicines optimisation at the point of admission.
We are looking for a dynamic and confident technician who is passionate about clinical medicines management, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, and can work autonomously while being part of a supportive multidisciplinary team.
The successful candidate will be registered with the GPhC and will hold an Accredited checking qualification. Applicants who are newly qualified will be offered a Band 4 initially then given the opportunity to automatically move to a Band 5 once all training and competencies are met.
We are looking for someone who:
* Has strong medicines management experience, ideally in an acute setting.
* Demonstrates excellent communication and organisational skills.
* Can confidently prioritise and work independently in a busy environment.
* Is adaptable, enthusiastic and committed to improving patient outcomes.
Hours of work will be 8:30 to 17:00 with the potential of rotational weekend and bank holiday working. Days of work will be discussed and agreed at interview.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an essential member of the FIT pharmacy service, providing high-quality medicines management to support safe and timely patient care. Key responsibilities include:
* Medicines clerking - accurately gathering and documenting patients' medication histories.
* Completing Anticholinergic Cognitive Burden (ACB) scores and escalating risks appropriately.
* Ordering and supplying medications for SDEC/FIT patients in a timely manner.
* Undertaking full medicines reconciliation, ensuring accuracy, compliance with policy, and appropriate clinical screening by a pharmacist.
* FP10 management and auditing, ensuring governance standards are met and reducing risk of misuse.
* TTA pack management and auditing, ensuring availability, rotation, and accurate documentation.
* Dispensing and accuracy checking of own TTAs, supporting rapid discharge and optimised patient flow.
* Managing SDEC/FIT stock levels, ensuring appropriate ordering, expiry checks, and governance across all areas.
* You will work closely with pharmacists, medical staff, nursing teams, and other allied health professionals to deliver a safe, responsive, and efficient service.
About us
We operate from three main hospitals -the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
The RLI and FGH have a range of General Hospital services, with busy Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Person Specification
Education and qualifications
* Recognised pharmacy technician qualification
* NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Service Skills or equivalent
* Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* Accredited checking qualification and registration with Northwest framework (equiv to NVQ level 4)
* GCP accreditation
* Assessor Award
Experience
* Relevant experience in hospital Pharmacy or other Pharmacy setting
* Experience in dispensing medications, drugs receipt, record keeping and cold chain maintenance
* Experience of hospital pharmacy and aseptics
* Experience with clinical Audit and data analysis
* Experience in specialist
Skills, ability and knowledge
* Working knowledge of pharmacy procedures, practices and legislation including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
* Good manual, accuracy and analytical dispensing skills
* Working knowledge of training requirements for technical / support posts
* Ability to motivate self and others and lead a team
* Ability to talk to / communicate with patients, carers and healthcare professionals clearly
* Good influencing and teaching skills
* Computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft word and skills for dispensing and record keeping
* Further computing skills e.g. presentations and spreadsheets
