Job overview

The post of the Maintenance Craftsperson Mechanical Building Services plays a key role in the Estates Operational Maintenance service. The individual will support the Operational Maintenance Team Manager
and Estates Engineering Officers in the delivery of maintenance programmes that will contribute to the Trusts maintenance and engineering objectives in line with statutory legislation and regulation, along with non-statutory best practice guidance like British Standards and Health Technical Memorandums (HTM).
The post holder will undertake works relating to the maintenance and repairs of trust properties, equipment, grounds & gardens ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, HTM’s, Trust Policies and procedures to ensure a clean, safe and functional environment for patients, staff and visitors to support the delivery of patient care.
The post holder will be required to undertake both planned and reactive maintenance work on a wide range of mechanical building services including specialised ventilation systems, complex water and heating
systems, steam and compressed air and medical gas pipelines, at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby. The post is site-based but you may be required to work on other Trust sites as necessary.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Be a member of a small group of technical staff who manage and operate complex technical systems and processes across the Trust, ensuring compliance with Trust standard operating procedures, policies and procedures and legislation.
Appointed to named competent roles in keeping with requirements laid down in Hospital Technical Memorandums (HTM) and Health and Safety documentation.
Support the Operational Maintenance Team Manager with the implementation of planned, reactive and routine maintenance.
Responsible for the implementation and sign off of documentation along with the responsibility of asset management and technical support for the Estate across all trades.
Complete data entry into paper and electronic systems (e.g. the completion of all job dockets, asset management details, time sheets and stock sheets).
Take part in the operational maintenance team “on call“ rota to provide out of hours maintenance service, particularly during the winter months, assisting with snow clearing, de-icing work and duties.
Have a good general education and general experience of engineering trades and will undertake on the job training or other training away from the place of work as dictated by the requirements of the role

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. City & Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate, NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualification in mechanical / building services engineering.
2. Recognised time served apprenticeship in mechanical or building services engineering i.e. plumbing, heating, commercial pipe fitting etc.
3. Mechanical engineering experience covering building ventilation systems, fire dampers, compressed air systems, commercial heating systems, steam & Condensate Systems.
4. Level 2 English & Maths or effective standard of spoken English and use of mathematics.
5. Hold Full Clean UK Driving Licence
6. Computer Literate including being able to use software programmes Word, Excel and Outlook.

Desirable criteria

7. Possess demonstrable knowledge of NHS procedures for the operational maintenance of acute hospital sites.
8. Knowledge of relevant Trust policies, health and safety and other legislation relevant to the position, such as HTM04, water systems
9. ONC/ HNC Qualification with structured apprenticeship.
10. Level 3 Leadership qualification or willing to work towards.
11. Knowledge of relevant Trust policies, health and safety and other legislation relevant to the position, such as Fire codes, Electrical Safety, Medical Gases, Specialist Ventilation Systems, etc.
12. Asbestos Awareness.
13. IOSH Working Safely.
14. IOSH Managing Safely.
15. CSCS Card.

Knowledge Training & Experiance

Essential criteria

16. Able to plan, organise and manage own work activities.
17. Able to accurately interpret information relating to H&S, legislation Mandatory requirements.
18. Proven relevant experience of planned preventative maintenance regime working on breakdowns on mechanical / plumbing plant and equipment in a Facilities Management or Hospital setting.
19. Able to understand Risk Assessment processes and carryout work utilizing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Work Instruction (WI).
20. Experience of working in a pressurised reactive environment.

Desirable criteria

21. Able to plan, organise and manage work related to projects, including liaison with contractors, staff and members of the public.
22. Able to work independently and make decisions based on analysis of information.
