General Manager – London Venues
You will report to the Business Manager for London and oversee the Deputy General Manager, Technical Heads of Department, and Sales & Ticketing Manager. Your core duties include managing and motivating the theatre staff, maintaining clear direction and business priorities, and delivering a profitable outcome by managing the venue’s Profit & Loss statement and all commercial and operational activities.
Key Responsibilities
Financial and Commercial
* Exercise effective financial control and reporting on the venue, including monthly reconciliations, settlements, and timely processing of purchase orders, deliveries, and invoices.
* Work with the Finance Business Partner to create the annual budget, achieve targets, and report regularly to stakeholders.
* Maximise revenue streams while keeping overheads in line with the budget.
* Oversee the stock management system to maintain a positive margin variance.
Customer
* Lead by example to empower the venue team to provide an unrivalled customer experience to audience and producer alike.
* Drive initiatives to maximise retail opportunities and innovate within the Customer Experience department.
* Ensure a proactive inclusive and accessible experience for a diverse audience.
* Serve as an ambassador for ATG.
* Duty‑manage performances, including evenings and weekends.
People Management
* Line‑manage the Deputy General Manager and Heads of Department (Technical and Sales & Ticketing).
* Lead recruitment for these roles and collaborate with the Deputy General Manager to deliver staff inductions, scheduling, training, and performance management.
* Motivate, develop, and succession‑plan the team.
* Create a meritocratic environment with a culture of excellent performance.
* Maintain effective communication channels with the venue team, key personnel, and external stakeholders.
* Oversee all HR processes, ensuring adherence to Union agreements.
Building and Risk Management
* Ensure fire safety, security, counter‑terrorism, building checks, risk assessments, and first aid procedures comply with the licence.
* Manage the venue’s repair and maintenance spend and liaise with ATG’s central Property and Facilities Management.
* Utilise in‑house technical teams and external contractors to maintain building systems.
* Develop and oversee a rolling maintenance programme to keep the venue at an excellent standard.
* Act as a custodian, ensuring the theatre is welcoming, safe, and fully operational.
* Lead staff engagement to meet environmental goals.
* Serve as the Designated Premises Supervisor.
* Report and investigate accidents and incidents thoroughly and timely.
* Act as a first aider and undertake necessary safety training.
Relationships
* Build positive and dynamic relationships between ATG, the resident producer, and external clients.
* Support all departments in delivering ATG’s vision and values.
* Develop constructive relationships with central ATG services, the local business community, and key external stakeholders.
* Maintain a positive relationship with Union representatives.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
* Previous management experience; 3+ years preferred.
* Ability to organise, lead, and motivate a large, diverse team.
* Passion for delivering high‑quality customer service in a busy environment.
* Strong internal and external relationship management.
* People development and training delivery experience.
* Problem‑solving, budget management, and smart work skills.
* Highly organised, flexible, and able to prioritise a varied workload.
* Collaborative, written reporting, presentation, and meeting chairing skills.
* Excellent IT skills, including Office 365 (Word and Excel).
Desirable Qualifications
* Personal licence holder.
* Knowledge of ticketing and retail systems.
* Interest and experience in the live entertainment industry.
* Appropriate management qualification.
* Health and Safety qualification or experience.
