The Laboratory Medicine Department has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team. The post holder will work within Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry and Specimen Reception, providing technical, scientific and data entry assistance to Biomedical Scientists and other departmental staff. The post holder will also participate in a rota schedule that includes weekend and night shifts.
The working pattern is rota‑based. Your contracted hours of 37.5 per week (full‑time) will be calculated across a rota period of 13 weeks in accordance with the Agenda for Change. Depending on service needs, total working hours may fluctuate, but your shifts will balance to remain within your contracted time.
The post holder is part of a team delivering a diagnostic Blood Sciences service to the Trust, comprising Medical Laboratory Assistants, Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, Clinical Scientists, Healthcare Scientists, clerical staff and medical staff. You will also interact with other staff in the Directorate.

Responsibilities:
* Collect, sort, prioritise and process samples in a busy environment while maintaining good working relationships with colleagues and service users.
* Activate specimen reception requests and ensure request forms and specimens are labelled according to laboratory policy.
* Under supervision, analyse samples received for testing.
* Store samples following completion of analysis in the appropriate storage system.
* Retrieve consumables and reagents from store, advising senior Biomedical Scientists when stock levels are low.
* Use the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
* Use the laboratory consumables ordering system to maintain stocks of reagents and consumables.
* Observe all applicable safety regulations and attend mandatory and statutory training.
* Undertake training to enhance performance within the Department.
* Respond professionally to incoming telephone calls.
* Liaise regularly with section heads/seniors to ensure smooth running of the sections.
* Order, receive and store consumables & general goods delivered to the laboratory.
* Perform other duties as directed by the Department Manager or technical staff.
