Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in Glaucoma

This 12 month locum role is a fantastic opportunity for Ophthalmology doctors with a special interest in Glaucoma. The Locum will provide high-quality care for glaucoma patients through outpatient clinics, surgical interventions, and laser treatments. In addition to clinical work, the role includes review of casualty patients and general ophthalmology patient reviews, teaching, research, service development, and contribution to clinical governance.


Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan
* Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff and allied health professionals, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
* Participate in clinical audit.
* Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process.
* Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Medical Staff to keep up to date with evidence based practice.
* Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as "Duties of a Doctor", "Good Medical Practice", & the "GMC Performance Procedures" .
* In exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within the Trust

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

Provide specialist glaucoma care, including diagnosis, medical management, laser treatments, and surgical interventions such as trabeculectomy, MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery), and tube surgery.

Run dedicated glaucoma clinics and contribute to general ophthalmology clinics as needed.

Manage complex glaucoma cases and develop personalized treatment plans.

Perform high-volume cataract surgery, particularly for glaucoma patients.

Participate in the consultant on-call rota for ophthalmic emergencies.

glaucoma multidisciplinary team, working with nurses, optometrists, and orthoptists.

Service Development:

Develop and expand the glaucoma service in line with best practice and NHS standards.

Implement innovative practices, including virtual clinics and enhanced diagnostic pathways.

Contribute to service improvement initiatives to enhance patient flow and outcomes.

Communications

Ensure patient treatment plans are communicated effectively to patients, carers, and other relevant colleagues

Ensure excellent and clear documentation in patient records

Effective communication with the MDT team and admin teams around the planning of clinical activity

Clinical Governance:

Contribute to clinical governance, including quality assurance, safety measures, and adherence to clinical guidelines.

Ensure the delivery of evidence-based and patient-centered care.

Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings and clinical risk management processes.

Responsibility for Patient Care

Overall responsibility for the clinical care of patients under direct care

To provide high quality care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff and ACCPs, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the hospital

To clinically assess patients and present back clinical findings at ward rounds

To undertake agreed management plan for the patients and monitor progress

The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and promote safeguarding by implementing the Trusts policies and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary.

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* 5 years experience
* NHS experience
* Evidence of Participation in Appraisal
* Computer literacy and IT skills
* Willingness to undertake professional responsibilities at local / regional level


Skills and Abilities

* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
* Ability to handle difficult patient interviews with tact and sensitivity


Experience

* Proven experience in managing complex Glaucoma


Knowledge

* Higher Medical Degree / Diploma Competency in glaucoma surgery, including trabeculectomy, tubes and MIGS.
* High volume cataract surgery experience
