Clinical/Counselling Psychologist Adult Wards
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary psychological therapies team covering both male and female adult acute inpatient wards at Potters Bar Clinic. The role involves providing specialist psychological assessments and interventions to service users with acute mental health needs. The position is for 37.5 hours a week, with consideration for part-time (4 days a week).
Main duties of the job
As a Psychologist, you will manage a caseload, including assessing complex needs and delivering specialist psychological treatments to support care plans. Responsibilities include individual and group interventions, diagnostic and cognitive assessments, MDT collaboration, and risk assessments. You will also facilitate staff reflective practice sessions and deliver training.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will provide specialist psychology assessments and interventions to adult patients with acute mental health needs on the ward, offering a clinical perspective on other patients as needed. Our model is formulation-driven and trauma-informed.

Clinical responsibilities
Provide autonomous specialist psychological services as agreed with the MDT, undertake assessments, deliver interventions based on formulations, and adhere to NICE guidelines. Participate in therapeutic groups, monitor and manage patient risks, and ensure accurate clinical recording. Attend ward rounds, case conferences, and prepare reports such as assessments and discharge summaries. Liaise with colleagues and complete all related documentation.
Supervision, training, CPD, and compliance
Attend supervision sessions, ensure mandatory training is current, stay informed of organizational policies, maintain professional registration, and contribute to reflective practice and training sessions for ward staff. Flexibility is provided for early morning and evening sessions to cover day and night staff.
Training and supervision
Facilitate reflective practice, contribute to training sessions, supervise assistant and trainee psychologists, and mentor Graduate Assistant Psychologists within the team.
Safeguarding
Comply with safeguarding policies, promote transparency and prompt reporting of concerns, and ensure actions align with safeguarding standards and policies.
Person Specification
Qualifications/Training/Education
* Postgraduate doctoral-level training in clinical or counselling psychology, accredited by BPS.
* HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist.
* Evidence of ongoing CPD.
* Experience with diverse client groups, inpatient settings, and providing assessments and formulations, including brief CBT and DBT for acute patients.
Skills & Knowledge
* Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with complex and sensitive information.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and its clinical implications.
Other Requirements
* Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team.
* Resilience and capacity to handle distressing clinical situations.
Additional Qualifications
* BPS-recognized psychology degree, HCPC registration, and experience in psychiatric settings.
