Offer description

The Opportunity Loughborough is an energetic market town with a rich creative and manufacturing heritage—nationally celebrated for its world-class textile history, historic bell-founding industry, and Loughborough University’s renowned creative arts and design department. We are seeking an imaginative, technically skilled Art Teacher to join a progressive, trust-supported academy. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to shape young creative minds, helping them master fine craftsmanship and contemporary design concepts while tapping into the town’s vibrant artistic networks. The Academy This is an ambitious, rapidly improving secondary school backed by a highly supportive regional education trust. The academy is deeply committed to raising aspirations across Leicestershire, implementing structured, positive behavioural routines that ensure classrooms remain calm, focused, and respectful. With a strong emphasis on staff well-being, the academy provides a collaborative environment where teachers are given the time, resources, and authority to teach effectively. The Department & Studio Culture You will teach inside dedicated, well-lit art studios equipped for printmaking, ceramics, fine art painting, and digital photography. The faculty is supported by an experienced creative arts technician who manages material stocks, kiln firings, and safety protocols for hands-on, multi-media learning. The curriculum focuses on building exceptional foundational skills at Key Stage 3—covering proportion, colour theory, and material manipulation—before transitioning into independent, concept-driven GCSE portfolios. Staff benefit from shared, trust-wide planning networks, providing high-quality project frameworks that significantly minimize individual workloads. Core Responsibilities Dynamic Studio Delivery: Planning and teaching high-challenge Art & Design lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE) that push students to build mechanical skill and creative resilience. Technical Craftsmanship: Leading safe, organized practical workshops in drawing, painting, 3D sculpture, and printmaking, ensuring students master tool discipline and material properties. Contextual Critique: Training students to analyse historical and contemporary artworks, deconstructing cultural impact, symbolism, and authorial intent. Portfolio Guidance: Scaffolding GCSE students through their Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) components, guiding them through rigorous research, design iterations, and final outcomes. Celebrating Achievement: Organizing regular school exhibitions and entering students into regional art competitions to elevate the profile of the creative arts. The Successful Candidate We are looking for an enthusiastic practitioner who is passionate about visual literacy and has the structural skills to run a fast-paced, active studio environment. Your application should show: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside a degree in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Textiles, or a related creative discipline. Consistent Behaviour Management: The capacity to implement explicit school routines with warmth and rigor, keeping the studio space focused, safe, and productive. Pedagogical Clarity: A talent for breaking down complex artistic processes—from perspective drawing to linocut printing—into accessible, engaging steps. Collaborative Mindset: A reflective team player eager to share resources, contribute to departmental development, and engage in peer-to-peer coaching. Why Join Our Staff? The support of a centralized education trust, offering shared planning networks, cross-school moderation, and excellent internal promotion opportunities. Comprehensive, evidence-based professional development focusing on cognitive modelling in the arts, advanced assessment techniques, and pathways to middle leadership. The fantastic lifestyle benefits of Loughborough—a bustling, well-connected university town offering affordable housing, green spaces, and rapid rail links to Leicester, Nottingham, and London. A sensible approach to workload, featuring centralized detentions, a streamlined feedback policy, and zero expectations of out-of-hours communication.
