Specialist Biomedical Scientist
Haematology/Blood Transfusion – Band 6 (Contract – 2 years, Fixed Term). Full time (37.5 hrs w/ shift work). HCPC Registered and IBMS Certificate of Competence required. IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent) mandatory; candidates 50‑75% through can start at Band 5 and transfer to Band 6 on completion.
Job Overview
To join the dynamic Haematology Department at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, engaging in routine and specialist testing, training, and quality assurance.
Main Duties
* Participate in laboratory rotation across Automated Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion sections.
* Work at University Hospital of Wales or University Hospital Llandough; cover full 7‑day shift roster.
* Maintain UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation standards and contribute to ISO/IEC 17025 compliance.
* Support development and implementation of LIMS processes.
* Provide CPD and peer‑training opportunities.
Responsibilities
* Conduct and supervise haematology and blood transfusion analyses on >3,000 samples daily.
* Ensure correct stock management and quality control of reagents and equipment.
* Produce, review and sign out analytical reports.
* Participate in quality improvement projects and service audits.
* Contribute to training of new staff and post‑graduate trainees.
Qualifications
* IBMS Approved Biomedical Scientist degree.
* IBMS Certificate of Competence.
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology and Hospital Blood Transfusion.
Experience
* Working in NHS Haematology/BTL Laboratory.
* Experience with shift work and LIMS system.
* Hands‑on experience in Haematology and Transfusion testing.
Skills
* Effective communication and team working.
* Supervisory and mentorship skills.
* Knowledgeable in GMP/GLP, health and safety, and laboratory procedures.
Additional Requirements
* Ability to work within a 7‑day shift pattern.
* Welsh language speaking desirable; bilingual candidates welcomed.
* Knowledge of ISO standards and quality systems.
