The Oncology Department at UCLH is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic General Manager to join our vibrant and supportive management team within the Cancer Division.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced operational leader to play a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective day‑to‑day management of our oncology services. The post holder will work closely with a wide range of staff groups, including medical, nursing, and administrative teams, to deliver high‑quality care and drive continuous improvement across inpatient, outpatient, and day case settings.

As a senior member of the management team, the General Manager will be encouraged to proactively identify, pursue, and lead service improvement and transformation initiatives. The role demands a comprehensive understanding of cancer performance, alongside the passion and capability to support developments in diagnostic and treatment pathways across the department.

We are looking for someone with proven experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, who demonstrates excellent communication and leadership skills, and whose approach reflects the UCLH values of safety, kindness, teamwork, and improving together.

This role offers the opportunity to make a real impact on the delivery and future direction of Oncology services within one of the UK's leading cancer centres.


Main duties of the job

* The day‑to‑day running of Oncology services including the Acute Oncology service and Cancer assessment unit
* Effective management of budgets, workforce, and performance
* Delivery of national cancer performance targets
* Leading service improvement and transformation projects
* Ensuring delivery of excellent, safe patient care and improving outcomes.
* Clinical governance, including ensuring complaints and incidents are investigated and responded to according to Trust standards and policies.
* Activity and Finance: achieving and setting annual plans, leading on delivery of CIP (cost improvement programme).
* Ensuring Key access targets are met within their specialties in particular Cancer Waiting Time Targets (CWT), 6 week diagnostic targets and 18 week RTT.
* Strategic and operational development of services.
* Supporting transformation and efficiency across all divisional sites.
* Maintaining performance in line with national targets and providing response for future surges or operational issues impacting on delivery of services.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria

* Management degree or equivalent (or in exceptional circumstance - able to demonstrate significant level of equivalent experience)
* A clear understanding of the components of Clinical Governance and how these contribute to an integrated and quality driven service
* Detailed knowledge and understanding of NHS targets and other topical NHS issues

Desirable criteria

* A formal post graduate qualification, ideally in management or equivalent senior level experience


Experience

Essential criteria

* Minimum of 3 years relevant management experience, preferably within the NHS or similar environment.
* Experience of effective management of budgets
* Experience of leading and supervising teams


Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria

* Ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks within agreed time scales.
* Project management skills
* IT literate: proficient in the use of word processing and spreadsheet packages


Communication

Essential criteria

* High standard of written and spoken English
* Able to present effectively to a variety of audiences (Staff, Senior/Executive Managers, Clinicians and external stakeholders)
* Excellent communication skills, including negotiation, with the proven ability to liaise effectively within a multidisciplinary team based environment
