We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 7 Epilepsy Nurse Specialist (Neurology) to permanently join our established specialist service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Responsibilities
* Deliver a high quality, specialist epilepsy nursing service to patients from the age of 18 with established epilepsy and those undergoing diagnosis.
* Act as a source of expert advice and information for patients, carers and other healthcare professionals to improve epilepsy care for the local population.
* Work independently with a caseload of patients and undertake advanced clinical assessments and make autonomous clinical decisions.
* Run independent nurse-led clinics and interpret diagnostic information.
* Support complex discharges, admission avoidance and improve in‑patient flow where possible.
* Deliver specialist education and training to staff caring for this specialist group within NUH and external care providers.
* Work in conjunction with other members of the epilepsy team to develop the strategic plan for the adult epilepsy service to ensure efficient and cost‑effective delivery.
* Ensure that the aims and objectives of the adult epilepsy service are delivered and implemented to continually improve the standard of care for adults with epilepsy, including any national guidance.

Qualifications and Training
* Current registration with appropriate professional body.
* Degree in health or nursing related studies.
* Relevant post‑registration study or willingness to undertake a master’s level study.
* Recognised teaching and assessing qualification or completion of teaching and assessing supervisor training. Evidence of leadership course.
* Completion of all local competency packages or relevant WINW packages essential to the role and specialty.
* Research training or experience. Demonstrates awareness of research principles and their application to clinical practice.
* Non‑Medical Prescriber or willingness to undertake if relevant to the role.
* Master’s degree or equivalent or willingness to work towards/equal equivalent experience.
Experience
* Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a band 6 role and/or working within a neurology ward or with epilepsy patients.
* Good understanding of epilepsy CNS role.
* Significant post‑registration experience at band 6 or above, in appropriate clinical setting.
* Demonstrates professional autonomy and effective decision‑making skills when managing caseload.
* Experience in supervision of registered, non‑registered staff and students.
* Ability to manage clinical patient caseload efficiently and effectively.
* Experience in using relevant hospital IT systems.
* Evidence of teaching and assessment skills, including teaching of patients, families and colleagues.
* Experience in epilepsy/neurology.
Communication and Relationship Skills
* Demonstrate basic IT skills.
* Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication, demonstrating evidence of negotiating and influencing skills.
* Ability to work within an MDT; collaborate, lead when required, negotiate with and influence the work of others across disciplines and on own initiative, including the sharing of highly complex information and implementation of plans for service development.
* Ability to deliver presentations and chair meetings.
* Ability to support colleagues, patients and relatives/carers in distressing circumstances.
* Experience of initiating and implementing change effectively, engaging stakeholders in the process.
* Evidence of networking locally, nationally and internationally.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
* Demonstrate confidence in assessing, planning, delivering, prioritising and evaluating patient care.
* Able to respond to problem situations and ensure effective interventions are put in place.
* Interpret and analyse highly complex clinical and non‑clinical information.
* Lead on identifying, successful implementation and management of a nursing change process.
* Recognise own level of competence and limitations. Able to identify own learning needs.
* Evidence of clinical and non‑clinical data collection, evaluation, analysis, interpretation and application to clinical practice.
* Experience in writing reports.
Planning and Organisational Skills
* Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload, and that of others.
* Recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations within an unpredictable working environment.
* Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of local protocols, objectives and action plans to introduce change.
* Supervise and support others in the prioritisation of their patient care.
* Awareness of budget constraints and ordering specialist supplies.
* Knowledge and understanding of national policy and current issues relating to specialty.
* Experience in reviewing service, ensuring compliance with national standards.
Physical Skills
* Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties.
* Demonstrate dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation.
* Able to undertake manual handling manoeuvres.
* Ability to work without supervision within scope of practice and manage own workload; effective time management.
