An exciting opportunity to join the Clinical Network Services Division, as a permanent 8PA Clinical Oncology Lung Consultant working among a multi-disciplinary team to offer specialist medical input for patients within the Lung disease group. The post-holder will work alongside the current Lung Consultant Clinical Oncology Team and is envisaged to have clinical commitments in Lung oncology, actively involved in this disease group, and developing the group’s interests through clinical and research activity. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience, with excellent oral and written communication and strong professional leadership skills to promote best outcomes for patients, relatives, and carers.
The appointee is expected to develop a significant interest in Lung Oncology delivering radiotherapy including SABR and systemic therapy. The post holder will be one of 9 Clinical Oncology specialists in lung cancer and will be an active member of the MDT. The Lung Consultant team is supported by 5 ANPs and 8 CNSs. The post holder will deliver all aspects of Radiotherapy including SABR, and is likely to deliver systemic therapy for NSCLC. The team supports cross-cover of clinical work. Training/mentorship can be provided working alongside qualified Nursing, Physics and Radiographic colleagues.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, based in Manchester and serving a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, with national referrals representing about 15% of patients. We provide radiotherapy through a large radiotherapy department, chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals, highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer, and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. The centre is active in research and trials, including a large early clinical trial unit and international leadership in research.
The outpatient clinics will be held at the Christie Withington site and Royal Oldham. The appointee will be a member of the NE sector MDT. There are opportunities for involvement in technical radiotherapy including SABR, Protons and MR Linac. The post also involves leadership, training and management roles (e.g., metastatic cord compression lead) as part of the Lung Oncology and Clinical Oncology teams.
Responsibilities
* Provide specialist medical input for patients within the Lung disease group as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Participate actively in clinical commitments in Lung Oncology and contribute to the development of the group’s interests through clinical and research activity.
* Deliver Radiotherapy including SABR and, where appropriate, systemic therapy for NSCLC, supporting cross-cover of clinical work.
* Be an active member of the MDT and collaborate with the Lung Consultant team, ANPs, CNSs, Nursing, Physics and Radiographic colleagues.
* Take on leadership, training and management roles within the service and participate in research trials and collaboration with Lung Medical and Clinical Oncology research teams.
* Contribute to the development of a rapid palliative radiotherapy service in conjunction with an advance practitioner, with expectation of patient numbers up to 28 new patients per year.
Qualifications and experience
* Highly motivated with excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to engage with colleagues at all levels and from all professional groups.
* Commitment to Lung Oncology and experience delivering radiotherapy including SABR; ability to deliver systemic therapy for NSCLC may be required.
* Strong interpersonal skills and professional leadership capabilities to improve patient care and experience.
* Willingness to participate in research and clinical trials and to take on leadership roles within the team.
