An exciting opportunity has emerged for experienced Consultant Ophthalmologists to join the largest cataract centre in Scotland. We offer sessions that are flexible to match the needs of both applicants and service.
NHS GJUNH Eye Centre
In November 2020 NHS GJUNH opened a purpose‑built Eye Centre which accommodates 20 pre‑assessment clinics and 60 theatre sessions per week. The design enables high‐volume cataract surgery to be performed effectively and efficiently. In 2025/26 the plan is to deliver 13,540 cataract surgeries. There is an ambitious plan to maximise all theatre capacity through successful recruitment of highly specialised cataract surgeons.
NHS GJUNH is a National Treatment Centre providing access to cataract surgery for patients from across Scotland. The innovative design is built around a proven patient pathway supported by a multidisciplinary team including specialist Ophthalmology Nurses, Optometrists and Ophthalmologists. Training and development opportunities are available through trainees from the West of Scotland Training programme and through contributions to training, quality improvement and service design.
The new facility is designed to enable accessible person‑centred care within a supportive environment with a creative wayfinding strategy specifically for the visually impaired and those with a disability visiting the unit.
Qualifications
Applicants must be registered with the General Medical Council, listed on the Specialist Register (or be within 6 months of entry) and hold an FRCOphth or equivalent higher surgical qualification, if from outside the UK.
