What will you do?
Travis Perkins recently completed a data centre exit programme which migrated all of our operational services into AWS. We are now optimising and modernising these services to better utilise cloud-native technologies. The Lead Platform Engineer will design, build, maintain and run cloud-based infrastructure for both traditional and cloud-native platforms. Using cloud technologies and automation you will define and follow good design practices, standards, documentation and approaches to create scalable, secure and reusable platforms predominantly in AWS.
Accountabilities of the role
* Design, develop and adopt automated, scalable, and secure cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines for strategic delivery of technology solutions.
* Lead support and maintenance of infrastructure or platform components to ensure they operate within supported version and configuration envelopes, providing the safest and most secure environment.
* Co‑author and maintain a catalogue of tools, standards, patterns and documents supporting public‑cloud platforms and oversee adherence by other platform engineers.
* Serve as an escalation point to resolve complex technical issues and queries for cloud platforms and automation tooling, and assist with architectural challenges.
* Design and implement logging, monitoring, alerting, backup and DR solutions throughout the platform lifecycle to meet agreed SLAs.
* Mentor, coach and lead training for other team members, ensuring quality, standards and best practices are adhered to.
* Continuously assess and optimise performance, security and cost‑effectiveness of platform infrastructure, including decommissioning plans for unused systems.
* Proactively develop skills to support the fast‑changing technology landscape and evaluate new technologies for business fit.
What you’ll need to have/be
* GCSEs + related A level / BTEC standard or Level 3 Apprenticeship.
* Any industry‑specific qualifications or certificates.
* 5+ years of software development, operations infrastructure support or platform engineering experience.
* Extensive experience with CI/CD and/or GitOps toolsets, building automated pipelines and platforms in cloud and infrastructure deployment exposure.
* Cloud technology awareness – ideally AWS & GCP.
* Experience with Agile, Scrum and iterative software development processes.
* Extensive skills using automation tools including Ansible, Terraform, AWS, GCP, GitLab.
* Experience designing, deploying and supporting infrastructure using IaC.
* Good knowledge of infrastructure and developer practices.
* Knowledge of pipelines and Continuous Integration.
* Knowledge of designing and deploying platform and infrastructure environments.
* Knowledge of containers, serverless and microservices.
* Knowledge of networking principles.
* Knowledge of security practices.
