What are we looking for?

Essential Skills Financial Literacy Strong numeracy and understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Organisational Ability Efficiently manage multiple financial tasks, keep accurate records, and meet deadlines. Attention to Detail Careful review of financial documents to spot errors and ensure legal compliance. Communication Clear skills to explain financial matters to trustees, staff, and others accessibly. IT Competence Familiarity with accounting software, spreadsheets, and digital tools; able to assist with finance-related IT tasks. Desirable Experience Charity Finance or Accounting Experience in charity finance roles, knowledge of charity accounting and regulations. Payroll and Bookkeeping Experience managing payroll, invoicing, and bookkeeping processes accurately and timely. Budget Planning & Reporting Ability to prepare budgets, monitor finances, and report to boards or committees. Governance and Compliance Understanding of charity governance, statutory filings, and risk management. Early Years Sector Knowledge Insight into early years funding, EYFS framework, and operational challenges. Staff Management Experience with recruitment, pay reviews, or employment law enhances staffing support. Personal Qualities Commitment Passion for early years education and alignment with Sacred Heart’s mission and values. Integrity High ethical standards, confidentiality, transparency, and acting in charity’s best interest. Reliability Dependable, accountable, and consistent in meeting deadlines and delivering quality work. Collaborative Spirit Works well with trustees, staff, and bookkeeper in a supportive team environment. Open to Learning Willing to engage with training and develop charity finance/governance skills. Additional Requirements Eligible to serve as a charity trustee under relevant law. Willingness to undergo enhanced DBS and meet Ofsted suitability criteria for working with young children. Prepared to disclose any convictions or cautions affecting trustee eligibility.

What will you be doing?

Location Flexible/Remote with occasional in-person meetings Time Commitment Approx. 3–4 hours/week during term time Remuneration Unpaid (volunteer) Accountable to Committee of Trustees Role Trustee / Financial Oversight / Governance The Treasurer is a key trustee responsible for the preschool’s financial health. Working closely with the Chair, Manager, and Bookkeeper, you’ll ensure sound, compliant financial management aligned with charity rules and legislation. This hands-on role supports the preschool’s accessibility, quality, and long-term sustainability. Key Responsibilities Guide financial strategy and uphold the charity’s aims Prepare, monitor, and report on budgets and cash flow, ensuring reserves Oversee bookkeeping payments, invoicing, payroll, expenses, and banking Support submission of statutory claims and filings Assist with annual accounts and independent examination Ensure compliance with legal and financial regulations, managing risk and insurance Participate in governance, conflict of interest management, and policy updates Support staffing issues such as pay reviews and recruitment Undertake other agreed tasks (e.g., IT or fundraising support) Time Commitment Approx. 3–4 hours/week during term time, including monthly meetings Flexibility for key periods like budgeting, year-end, and AGM Person Specification Commitment to Sacred Heart’s values and aims Eligible to be a charity trustee, willing to undergo DBS and Ofsted checks Strong numeracy, organisation, and attention to detail Professional, reliable, collaborative, and confidential Willing to commit time and actively engage in governance Desirable Experience in charity finance, treasury, or accounting Familiarity with payroll and accounting software Knowledge of charity governance and Early Years Foundation Stage Experience managing budgets and employing staf Safeguarding This role requires an enhanced DBS check and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Trustees must disclose relevant convictions or cautions.
