The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross‑sector skills across five key sectors: Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation, and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.
Overview of the role
We are seeking a Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join our Building Services team. The role involves working on private and public sector projects, including major framework and infrastructure developments, as well as one‑off projects. It is challenging, varied, and offers opportunities for skills development and career progression.
As the successful candidate, you will have a strong background in Building Services Mechanical Engineering design and technical competencies. Excellent written and verbal communication of technical issues to technical and non‑technical audiences is essential.
Key responsibilities and duties
* Preparation and review of documentation such as basis of designs, technical/design specifications, procurement specifications, assessment reports, and survey reports at the appropriate project stages, covering all aspects of mechanical services.
* Implementation of detailed surveys of mechanical services and equipment to establish the status of existing installations and gather information for new or upgrade design proposals.
* Producing and reviewing mechanical design drawings and detailed calculations including HVAC, water, drainage, etc.
* Producing fee estimates for work elements.
* Advising on all aspects of energy consumption and utilisation with recommendations to improve energy performance.
* Monitoring the design and project management of building services elements within agreed programmes.
* Ensuring compliance with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, current legislation and standards for delegated projects.
* Supporting, mentoring and coaching junior mechanical engineers and apprentices to develop their skill set.
Candidate specification
Essential
* Experience of mechanical engineering in the built environment, preferably within a consultancy business.
* A degree in Building Services Engineering specialising in mechanical services.
* Actively working towards chartership.
* Up to date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building/infrastructure design environments.
* Highly competent user/knowledge of industry recognised software and mechanical engineer design tools including NBS specifications and IES/TAS/H2X.
* BIM knowledge and experience.
* Self‑motivated, with the ability to work on own initiative and confidence to make decisions.
* Ability to work well collaboratively, both internally and with external partners and sub‑contractors.
