Specialist Occupational Therapist
We are pleased to offer an exciting fixed‑term (9 months) opportunity to join our Occupational Therapy Team based at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, covering maternity leave across a variety of clinical areas, including elements of community working.
The role involves a specialist caseload across Integrated Community Stroke team, Acute frailty & extended stay wards, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services and Emergency Department, with opportunities to work alongside our Discharge to Assess service.
Main duties of the job
1. Hold a specialist caseload in rotational clinical areas whilst supporting Occupational Therapists and the therapy team with their caseloads.
2. Apply experience in acute inpatient, admission avoidance or community‑based rehabilitation services, facilitating safe and effective care and hospital discharge.
3. Work collaboratively with the MDT and complex discharge team; provide supervision and support to Occupational Therapy team members and students.
4. Engage in service development and pursue in‑service training; CPD is well supported by management.
Requirements
* A Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
* Registration with HCPC as an Occupational Therapist.
* Ability to travel to a variety of community venues to deliver patient assessments and attend meetings.
* Broad previous experience within acute inpatient, admission avoidance or community‑based rehabilitation services.

We operate from three main hospitals—Furness General Hospital (Barrow), Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Westmorland General Hospital (Kendal)—and several community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice; Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe; and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
Each hospital provides a range of general hospital services, including full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, various consultant‑led services, and an Urgent Treatment Centre. Education and Qualification
Essential
* Health and Care Professions Council registered Occupational Therapist.
* Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the Royal College of OT, UK.
* Post‑graduate training or experience to post‑graduate diploma level or equivalent.
Desirable
* Accredited training in risk assessment and risk management.
* Practice placement educator accreditation.
* Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.
Experience
Essential
* Relevant post‑registration experience as an OT achieving knowledge and skills applicable to this post.
* Post‑registration experience in a relevant clinical area.
Desirable
* Experience of research or audit.
* Experience as a supervisor of OT (Band 5) and/or OT support staff and/or OT students.
Skills, ability and knowledge
Essential
* Transferable knowledge and skills at basic practitioner level with aptitude to develop to specialist OT practitioner level.
* Assessment, observation, evaluation and reporting skills.
* Ability to develop effective working relationships / team working.
* Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues.
* Ability to work under pressure and recognise when support is required.
* Effective personal organisational skills to manage own workload and determine priorities to support delivery of the site OT service.
Desirable
* Training and facilitation skills.
* Clinical work experience at OT Band 5 grade in a variety of clinical areas in an acute hospital setting and community.
Personal Qualities
Essential
* Ability to meet the physical requirements of the post.
* Ability to participate in manual handling tasks and therapeutic handling.
* Ability to travel to provide assessment and treatment to patients in the community and to attend meetings.
