Heavy Plant - Workshop Manager

Are you a hands-on leader with a strong background in heavy plant maintenance and a passion for developing people? Were seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to oversee all workshop operations at a busy heavy plant hire depot in Bedford.
In this role, youll report directly to the Depot Manager and lead a team of 4 Workshop Fitters and 2 Yard Staff, ensuring the companys fleet of heavy plant equipment is maintained to the highest standards and fully compliant. The position is 50% hands-on engineering and 50% management and planning, offering a great balance of leadership and technical involvement.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead, manage, and develop the workshop and yard teams.
* Schedule and oversee planned maintenance, PDIs, LOLER inspections, and repairs on heavy plant equipment.
* Ensure timely turnaround of machinery to meet customer and hire demands.
* Maintain accurate stock control, parts ordering and workshop records.
* Drive a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement across the team.
* Coordinate with Depot and Operations Managers to maximise fleet availability.
* Deputise for the Depot Manager when required.
What Were Looking For:
* City & Guilds / NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plant Maintenance (or equivalent).
* Proven background in heavy plant, construction equipment or similar mechanical industries.
* Previous experience leading or supervising a team in a workshop environment.
* Excellent problem-solving and organisational skills.
* IT-literate and comfortable using workshop systems.
* Full UK driving licence (max 3 points).
