BN1 Arts Post: Student Support Officer

Reporting to: Head of Student Services

Freelance Hours TBC: Up to 21 hours per week, term time only.

BN1 Arts: Brighton’s Centre of Excellence for Music and Performing Arts. BN1 Arts is a Brighton-based college with a mission to create a vibrant community where aspiring talents and established industry figures can converge, fostering a dynamic environment that nurtures growth and success. Our focus is to provide 16-19-year-olds passionate about music and performing arts with industry-led training across Extended Diplomas in the Creative Music Industry and Creative and Performing Arts.

Person Specification:

The post holder will have a key role in safeguarding, supporting and promoting the wellbeing of the student body in order to support students’ emotional and practical needs to ensure all students complete their studies, progress on their course and achieve to the highest level.

Essential criteria for applicant

● Experience of working in Education

● Professional experience of working with young people

● Professional experience of working with high needs learners and vulnerable young people

● Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively on all levels

● Able to work positively with students to support, respect and empower those in distress

● Commitment to delivering a high quality of customer service

● Able to prioritise and self-manage workload

● Able to work appropriately with confidential and sensitive data

● Experience of working with or strong knowledge of pastoral issues

● Able to work quickly and accurately under pressure

● Excellent teamwork skills

● Computer literate with an excellent knowledge of Excel and Word

Desirable criteria for applicant

● Experience working with exam rules and regulations

● Qualification in counselling skills or similar

● High level accuracy in data inputting

● Good capacity for self-reflection and high level of self-awareness for dealing with high level pastoral issues

● Experience of working with or strong knowledge of Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Key accountabilities Student Support

● Assuming role as main point of contact for students, tutors and parents for relevant cohort

● Assume role of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and assist the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) in all matters of safeguarding and child protection across the school.

● Providing information and advice service to students on wide range of pastoral issues and college policy and procedures

● Coordinating student tutorials to discuss pastoral, academic and attendance issues

● Recording confidential tutorial notes to track needs of students

● Work with students and academic staff to agree solution-focused strategies

● Referring to, and liaising with both internal staff and external agencies where appropriate to implement further support

● Promotion of Student Support services to student body

● Monitoring and reporting on attendance

● Recording student absences on attendance software

● Implementation of disciplinary procedures where necessary

● Working with the SEND Co-Ordinator to ensure needs of the student cohort are met

● Engage with supervision when appropriate

● Comply with Further Education sector statutory requirements

● Liaise with funding partner Quality

● Working with academic staff to ensure student satisfaction remains high including implementation of focus groups, questionnaires and surveys

● Enrolling and maintaining student master data on relevant databases

● Assisting with the administration of withdrawals, deferrals and course transfers

● Representing Student Services at meetings and liaising with student representatives when required

● Committing to personal and professional development in order to expand and promote the service available to students

● Contributing to Student Services annual review

General Administration

● Maintenance of confidential student data files

● Covering reception duties as and when required

● Monitoring Student Support email inbox

● Enrolment/Induction period duties including assisting with scheduling of events and presenting to new intake as well as returning students

● Distribution of college information to student body

The successful candidate will comply with and implement as appropriate, all of BN1 arts policies and procedures, with particular reference Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity, and Health and Safety. NB: This is not a complete statement of all duties and responsibilities of this post.

The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in keeping with the nature of the post as directed by, and agreed with their Line Manager. As a centre of excellence for young learners we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students and expect all staff to share this commitment. Therefore all successful appointments are subject to referencing, an Enhanced DBS check and Barred List check and a Right to Work check. Anybody who works in an education setting has a duty to protect the welfare of the young people that attend. The successful candidate will complete Safeguarding and Prevent training and be aware of BN1 Arts policies on safeguarding and child protection. They must also engage with inset and training days to stay informed of any new developments related to safeguarding in order to ensure the safeguarding and wellbeing of all.
