Freelance Marketing and Communications Manager – Commitment: 16 days total. We are open to discussing the days, including 1 or 2 days per week as preferred for both parties. Reporting to: Executive Producer and Artistic Director. Place of work: Richard Street Studios, 44-46 Richard Street, Rochdale, OL11 1DU. Some meetings can be online, but we would prefer the 1 day to be in person if possible.

Breaking Barriers is a Rochdale-based multidisciplinary production company dedicated to amplifying unheard voices and bringing high-quality work to local streets and people. We collaborate with communities, young individuals, and artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Through co-creation, we tell stories in ambitious digital formats that enlighten audiences, increase cultural appetite, and break down socio-economic barriers.
About Richard Street Studios
Richard Street Studios is a shared studio and creative space for artists and community use in Rochdale. We offer affordable space, collaboration opportunities, and a welcoming home for makers, performers, and grassroots groups. Strong digital marketing will be key to helping more people discover and use this resource.
About Stories We Tell
Stories We Tell Rochdale is an immersive guided audio tour through Rochdale Town Centre. It combines a roaming gallery or storybook experience with stories from local residents, using the streets as a canvas through window fronts, video projections, and binaural sound to create an immersive outdoor piece.
The Freelance Marketing and Communications Manager will:
* Interrogate Breaking Barriers’ current marketing systems (website, social media, ticketing platforms, mailing lists, newsletters) and create an inventory or report on current methods.
* Lead the team to discuss better systems and implement them within the organisation.
* Lead integrated campaigns across print, digital, PR and other relevant platforms.
* Shape the Breaking Barriers story and create a storytelling strategy that highlights origin, vision, the young company, projects, the studio, and the team.
* Identify training needs within the team.
* Grow audiences, income and brand profile.
* Identify a brand and style to use across all platforms.
* Champion values-led communications across all platforms.
* Create a brief for a Marketing Assistant to deliver upon the strategy.
* Build and maintain relationships with press/media; prepare and circulate press releases as required.
* Plan the collection of audience data, testimonials and feedback to support impact reports and evaluations.
* Adhere to GDPR regulations and Breaking Barriers’ policies.
* Be an advocate for and represent Breaking Barriers at online/in-person events and support productions.
Skills Required
* A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant marketing or communications role, ideally within the arts or cultural sector.
* Strong written and verbal communication, copy-writing, and public speaking skills.
* Proven ability to plan and deliver effective long- and short-range marketing campaigns with clear outcomes.
* Confident in managing websites and digital platforms.
* Genuinely committed to working with Breaking Barriers and the communities it engages with.
* Ability to communicate with different audiences, partners, stakeholders, team members, and communities online and in person.
* Interest and passion in supporting a small organisation to grow with robust systems and strategies.
