Job Summary

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated, innovative and enthusiastic Healthcare Support Worker to join our forward-thinking, friendly and expanding Health & Justice team at HMP Send. The role is part of the Prisons Health Care Team, where you will look after the healthcare needs of patients in secure environments and promote health and well‑being. The team works a 7‑day week model to maintain the highest standards of patient care.

Our motto is Caring NOT Judging. We work with the criminal justice system and other agencies to provide high‑quality primary care and mental health services to those who may have offended or are at risk, improving health status and encouraging social inclusion.


Responsibilities

* Keep patients safe by recognizing the limits of the HSW role and working closely with registered professionals.
* Contribute to optimal clinical outcomes by using up‑to‑date skills and adhering to evidence‑based policies when implementing care plans.
* Ensure a positive patient experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership with patients when implementing and evaluating care plans.
* Demonstrate competence in venepuncture, smoking cessation and health promotion where required.
* Participate in group activities, run clinics and facilitate complex case‑management cases.
* Maintain accurate records of physical observations (weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood‑pressure) and report significant findings to the nurse in charge.
* Escort patients as required, ensuring safety and security.
* Observe patients per Trust policy, participate in supervision, appraisal processes and personal development activities.
* Identify areas for improvement in safety or quality and collaborate with the team to enhance services.
* Comply with mandatory training requirements and first‑aid training as required.


Person Specification

Essential

* Numeracy and literacy skills sufficient to keep accurate records and administer medicines.
* Spoken and written English to an appropriate standard.
* Ability to communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Understanding of the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers.
* Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in a fast‑paced or customer‑focused environment.

Desirable

* Relevant Level 3 qualification (e.g., apprenticeship, A‑levels, T‑levels, NVQ).
* Care Certificate (supported to complete within 3 months).
* Experience of venepuncture, patient assessments and observations.
* Smoking cessation certification (level 1 or 2).
* Experience in mental health settings or in an offender/secure care setting.


Essential Skills and Knowledge

* Strong communication skills and ability to update the team via handover.
* Maintain electronic and handwritten clinical records that adhere to CNWL policies.
* Use Microsoft Word to draft letters and reports.
* Work under your own initiative while following care plans and directives of registered nurses.
* Acquire consent and respect the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
* Work well with other team members; be kind, considerate, reliable and enthusiastic.

* Rank: Band 3
* Salary: £26,240 to £27,928 per annum (incl. Fringe HCAS pro‑rata).
* Contract: Permanent, Part‑time.
* Working pattern: Part‑time.
