Job Summary

A GP Assistant (GPA) will support the smooth running of clinics by performing routine administrative and clinical tasks, allowing GPs to focus on patient care.


Primary Responsibilities

1. Sort and prioritize all clinical post for the GP, signposting to other team members such as clinical pharmacists as needed.
2. Extract and code information from clinical letters, updating patient notes accordingly.
3. Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-ups for patients.
4. Prepare patients for consultations by taking brief histories and basic readings.
5. Perform basic clinical tasks such as urine testing, blood pressure measurement, ECGs, and phlebotomy.
6. Complete basic forms (e.g., insurance, mortgage, benefits) for GP approval.
7. Explain treatment procedures to patients.
8. Assist the GP in liaising with outside agencies, such as contacting on-call doctors or arranging admissions.
9. Support immunizations and wound care procedures.
10. Alert team members to issues of quality and risk.
11. Follow practice protocols and standards.
12. Assess personal performance and accountability.
13. Contribute to team effectiveness through reflection and suggestions for improvement.
14. Collaborate with other agencies to meet patient needs.
15. Manage own time, workload, and resources effectively.
16. Apply practice policies, standards, and guidance.
17. Participate in audits as appropriate.


Person Specification


Essential Criteria

* GCSE Grade A to C in English and Maths.
* Willingness to work towards a GP Assistant Certification qualification.
* Experience in coordinating tasks and liaising with healthcare professionals internally and externally.
* Experience using technology and digital tools.
* Immunization status for Hep B and MMR.


Desirable Criteria

* Experience as a Healthcare Assistant, Practice Administrator, or similar role in primary care.
* Experience working with healthcare professionals in the NHS, social care, or relevant fields.
* Experience with clinical systems such as EMIS.
