Orthoptist – Band 8a
Band 8a: £53,755 – £60,504 pro rata, per annum
Lead the Isle of Wight Orthoptic service as an experienced Orthoptist with the opportunity to develop into a variety of extended roles. The department provides comprehensive ophthalmic services to residents and handles busy paediatric and adult strabismus caseloads.
Responsibilities
* Lead the orthoptic service and oversee service development, collaborating closely with Portsmouth University Hospitals NHS Trust.
* Plan, implement, and monitor individualized orthoptic treatment plans and care pathways for patients of all ages, applying advanced clinical reasoning and evidence‑based practices.
* Develop and deliver specialized training and education to students, pre‑registration optometrists, healthcare assistants, and nurses.
* Adapt the service to changing needs and demands, maintaining high standards of patient care.
Skills and Qualifications
* Extensive clinical experience in orthoptics.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Experience in service improvement and clinical research (publications/presentations).
* Strong teamwork, communication, problem‑solving, time‑management, and prioritisation skills.
* Commitment to learning and development of self and others.
* Ability to operate orthoptic equipment, perform examinations accurately, and train others.
* Empathy, active listening, therapeutic skills, and the ability to build rapport with children, families, and adults.
* Capability to manage clinical workload, remain calm under pressure, and adapt to evolving service demands.
