ATD/Principal Soils Scientist/Consultant

Our Soils and Sustainable Land Management team is looking for an Associate or Principal Soils Consultant with a broad range of EIA experience to work collaboratively across technical specialists, lead and coordinate topic‑specific input to Environmental Impact Assessments and related deliverables, work closely with clients, develop new areas of business and mentor others in the team.
Role description
As part of our Environmental team, you’ll help improve quality of life. Your work may involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality or noise, and will be in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations. You will play a key role in the successful delivery of major multidisciplinary development projects, driving technical excellence and supporting digital innovation.
Responsibilities
* Lead the coordination and delivery of soil and land use assessments as part of Environmental Impact Assessments for a wide range of projects.
* Coordinate and lead soil and Agricultural Land Classification surveys.
* Undertake your own work to an excellent standard and review the work of others.
* Work in partnership with other members of the Soils Team, the Impact Assessment Team and related discipline teams across the UK.
* Proactively manage selected projects or components of projects, taking responsibility for resource allocation, managing subcontractors and quality assurance.
* Lead and support tender proposal/bid work as part of a project winning team.
* Provide soils and land use advice and support to clients, project managers and colleagues.
* Engage with consultees and stakeholders.
* Develop outstanding reports, summarising and explaining outcomes to non‑technical audiences.
* Manage projects and oversee performance on technical, quality, commercial and health and safety aspects.
Qualifications & Experience
* Experienced soil consultant/scientist with experience of Environmental Impact Assessment, preferably within a consultancy environment or with multi‑disciplinary work and broad sector experience.
* Experience of soil surveying, ideally including knowledge and experience of the Agricultural Land Classification system.
* Member of the British Society of Soil Science and Chartered/working towards chartership with an accredited Institution.
* Good knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessment and the planning process in relation to soils and land use.
* Strong report writing, verbal and presentation skills with experience in reviewing the work of others to ensure quality.
* Experience in multi‑disciplinary work, with good project management and technical skills.
* Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators and stakeholders.
* Commercial expertise, including forecasting, project management and quality assurance.
* A valid UK driving licence.
* Desired: Knowledge and application experience of carbon accounting in relation to soils and land use.
