An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic appropriately experience, qualified nurse to join the colorectal team at James cook university hospital for a 12 month maternity cover.

The post holder will provide specialist nursing support to patients with Colorectal Cancers and will be an integral part of the multi-professional colorectal cancer team

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be mentored and supported by the Colorectal Cancer Nurse Specialist Nursing team and will carry a supervised caseload providing specialist nursing advice, information and support to patients with colorectal cancers and their families at all stages of their disease, and, in particular whilst they are being cared for at South Tees NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust thus ensuring a smooth transition of care from primary surgery through to radiotherapy/chemotherapy and into the community. Strong links will be expected to be maintained across the surgical and oncology pathway to ensure seamless care for the patient.

The post holder will liaise with services within South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust and with other key partners such as community teams, social services, hospices and voluntary agencies to ensure quality service provision for all patients under their care. They will contribute to improving clinical practice, enhancing service provision and streamlining patient focused care. The post holder will be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team and network with other professionals, locally and nationally for the purpose of contributing to developing practice, research and audit, development of standardised patient information, and clinical supervision.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

5. NMC level 1 registration
6. 1st level degree or working towards
7. Specialist qualification in cancer care/colorectal nursing or willing to undertake
8. Teaching Qualification ENB 998 or C&G 730 or equivalent
9. Hold a record of continuous professional and academic development.

Experience

Essential criteria

10. Extensive post registration experience.
11. Recent experience in cancer care
12. Experience in supporting and managing cancer patients
13. Experience of input into audit
14. Experience in managing change
15. Understanding and experience of service improvement
16. Experience of working within a busy clinical environment and within multidisciplinary teams.
17. Evidence of continuing professional development
18. Experience of implementing protocols and guidelines

Knowledge

Essential criteria

19. Knowledge of audit and research processes and its application
20. Knowledge of the Clinical Governance agenda and NHS Plan
21. Knowledge about the development of the specialist nurse role in a modern NHS
22. Understanding of the need for strong commitment to high standards of patient care and the active involvement of users in the development of the service
23. Ability to work in a complex environment across the whole of the cancer pathway
24. Advanced interpersonal/communication skills including self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
25. Ability to contribute to development of staff/service as part of a team to optimise resources
26. Ability to manage self effectively
