Trust Doctor (Core Trainee Level), fixed termcontract (LAS), in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department has avacancy of a Trust Doctor (Core Trainee level) post, to start 6th September2023, for a period of one year. The successful applicant will gain experiencein the management of head and neck oncology, maxillofacial trauma, cutaneousmalignancy, salivary gland surgery, sialoendoscopy, orthognathic surgery andimplant surgery. In addition there is a high volume of minor oral surgery, withregular opportunities to increase their surgical experience


Main duties of the job

The post is based at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trustfor on call, with clinical duties both in Rotherham General Hospital andMexborough Montagu Hospital. There is middle grade support for the JuniorDoctors and a strong commitment to teaching from senior staff.. The on callcommitment is a 1:8 full shift rota.

The OMFS department has a weekly teachingprogramme, in addition to bimonthly audit / clinical effectiveness meetings.Rotherham Hospital has an excellent postgraduate medical education and clinicalskills department.

Job responsibilities

The department of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgery at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust delivers specialist electivesurgical treatments to patients from the Rotherham area, providing in-patientand day surgery operating, out-patient Minor Oral Surgery, and out-patientclinics at Rotherham General Hospital. In addition, the department provides aspecialist OMFS emergency service for patients from the catchment areas ofRotherham, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals.

The Maxillofacial Surgery Unit atRotherham General Hospital treats the full spectrum of OMFS diagnoses. Specialinterests within the department are head and neck cancer surgery, salivarygland surgery, including the management of salivary gland calculi usingsialendoscopy, orthognathic surgery, the surgical management of skin cancers ofthe head and neck, and implant surgery. In addition, the department treats alarge volume of maxillofacial trauma, and the consultants in the department areexperienced in the use of up-to-date techniques such as orbital reconstructionusing custom-made orbital implants, and the management of fractures of themandibular condyle with endoscopically assisted fixation. Approximately 350emergency cases are operated on in the department each year.

The provision of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeryservices for Rotherham, Doncaster and Worksop is delivered from the OMFSdepartments at Rotherham General Hospital and Mexborough Montagu Hospital,Doncaster. All acute operating and elective major operating takes place atRotherham General Hospital. Day surgery services, out-patient Minor OralSurgery operating, and out-patient clinics are delivered on both sites.

The Trust Doctor (Core Trainee level) will spendthe majority of their time at Rotherham General Hospital, but will also rotateto Mexborough Montagu Hospital, where they will attend out-patient clinics andday surgery theatres, according to a rolling timetable.

On call duties

1:8/1:10 on call covering nights and weekends.The DCT on call will take referrals from A&E and other trusts whilemanaging inpatients admitted under the care of OMFS.

Person Specification


Experience

* Previous NHS experience
* Completion of Dental Foundation Training / Medical Foundation training


Research and Audit

* Enthusiasm for participation in research
* Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following the audit


Qualifications

* Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC or GDC
* Please confirm GMC / GDC number
* MBBS Medical Degree
* BDS or equivalent Dental qualification, or MBChB or equivalent
* Eligibility to work in the UK


Ability/skills

* History taking and examinations skills
* Appropriate knowledge of basic science and ability to apply it to clinical care
* Basic life support skills
