Overview
James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Haematology. This is a permanent 1.0 WTE post covering 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week, based at James Paget University Hospital, Monday to Friday. On-call responsibility is 1 in 5, with prospective cover for leave. The final job plan and timetable will be agreed with the Clinical Lead within three months of the start date. A 10 PA contract is offered in the first instance, with potential for additional PAs. The weekly timetable will include a mix of clinical and professional activities to be agreed after discussion with the Clinical Lead.
On-call pattern: 1 in 5 with junior/middle grade support within haematology during on-call periods. The role includes attendance at MDTs, teaching, and participation in relevant clinical governance and CPD activities.
Responsibilities
* Direct Clinical Care (Includes lab work, clinics, day ward, clinical admin): 8.5 PAs per week.
* Supporting Professional Activities (CPD/Teaching/Research/Audit/Clinical Governance): 1.5 SPAs per week.
* Share workload across anticoagulant, antenatal Haematology and Transfusion services; work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Attend and discuss all appropriate patients at MDT meetings for Haematological Oncology and other MDTs as arranged.
* Provide support for the pathology laboratory within the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), including attendance at local and EPA-level forums.
* Participate in clinical meetings, postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, and contribute to teaching of UEA medical students; participate in department teaching and audit activities, quality control in the laboratory, and clinical trials.
* Provide mutual out-of-hours cover for annual, study and professional leave; short periods of sick leave to be covered by remaining consultants (where applicable).
* Share a 1:5 on-call rota (Band A); junior and middle grade support from within haematology to be on-call during on-call periods.
* Participate in Clinical Governance processes and CPD; contribute to service management and, by agreement, take on the role of clinical lead in due course.
* Comply with Consultant work programme and weekly timetable of fixed NHS activities in accordance with guidance.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential: MBBS or Basic Medical Degree; Full GMC Registration; MRCP or equivalent; eligible for UK Specialist Register within 6 months of interview.
* Training, Audit and Research: Ability to apply research outcomes in clinical practice; knowledge of evidence-based medicine; familiarity with clinical audit.
* Desirable: Involvement in research projects and published papers.
* Experience: Wide experience in clinical and laboratory Haematology including benign and malignant disease; ability to provide expert clinical opinion across haematology; willingness to lead a multidisciplinary team; ability to plan and develop a modern service.
* Desirable: Committee work/project management; experience and interest in acute leukaemia and myeloid disorders.
* Management and Leadership: Organise and prioritise work; develop the service; participate in clinical governance; work under pressure; experience in teaching junior medical staff.
* Desirable: Experience teaching medical students; openness to change.
