Purpose Of The Role
As a Senior Design Engineer, you’ll play a key role within the Engineering Design Team, working closely with Principal Engineers, Design Managers and Design Leads to deliver high-quality technical design in line with processes, the BMS and all relevant H&S regulations. You’ll contribute directly to water and wastewater project delivery, bringing strong technical competence and, where required, providing line management to discipline and non-discipline design engineers. Alongside driving innovation, you’ll support engineering governance, ensure integration across all design disciplines, assist with supply chain procurement activities and provide technical input to site teams. You’ll also work with the Discipline Manager and Principal Engineers to support knowledge sharing, mentor early-career engineers and help develop capability across the discipline.
Key Accountabilities
* Ensure technical compliance and quality across all design outputs, acting as the default checker.
* Lead discipline-specific design activities on assigned projects.
* Develop efficient, cost-effective design solutions that support capital and operational goals.
* Design with buildability, safe construction, and safe operation in mind, working closely with delivery teams.
* Support procedural governance and adherence to client standards and specifications.
* Ensure full compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation.
* Drive innovation, value engineering, and digital design methods.
* Provide technical problem-solving throughout the project lifecycle, identifying and managing risks and opportunities.
* Assist with pre-contract design work.
* Capture and share lessons learned with the Design Team and Discipline Design Managers.
* Manage and support multi-disciplinary Design Engineers.
* Mentor and develop the design team, fostering knowledge sharing and professional accreditation
Person Specifics
* Strong in Process Calculations, Mass/Heat Balances and Hydraulics, plus skilled in preparing Process Block Diagrams, PFDs and P&IDs.
* Experienced in developing Control Philosophies and Commissioning Plans; HAZOP leadership and DSEAR exposure desirable.
* Degree-qualified Engineer (or equivalent) with preference for Chartered status and solid consultancy/contracting experience.
* Competent in checking and approving design packages, with good commercial awareness and strong knowledge of H&S legislation and British Standards.
* Excellent communicator with strong stakeholder management, negotiation and influencing skills.
* Confident using Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and cost/performance systems.
* Provides clear leadership and support to the design team, driving results while maintaining high attention to detail.
* Flexible, collaborative, and aligned with the values, bringing strong problem-solving skills and an openness to innovation.
* Able to organise workload effectively, work independently or in a team, and build positive relationships by adapting communication style.
