North Lanarkshire Council is the fourth largest local authority in Scotland, responsible for providing key public services to residents. The Finance Team supports Education and Families Service, including schools, nurseries, Social Work Children’s Services and Social work Criminal Justice. These posts offer practical financial and administrative training through work placements in schools and headquarters teams, with support through the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) professional qualification. The training programme takes approximately 3 years and aims to provide skills and experience for a modern financial and accounting environment.
Salary bands and eligibility
* External Applicants: Year 1 MA Grade - £12.60 per hour; Year 2 NLC3 - £25,098 per year; Year 3 NLC5 - £26,991 per year
* Internal Applicants: Year 1 & 2 NLC4 - £26,081 per year; Year 3 NLC5 - £26,991 per year
Training and progression
Progression through the salary range is dependent on successful completion of work placements and relevant stages of the AAT examinations. Employees can apply on their current grade up to NLC4 and will continue in this grade until Year 3 when they will progress to NLC5 in line with the programme criteria.
Role context
Successful candidates will join the Council’s Finance Team and predominantly work in the Education and Families Service whose core operations include provision of schools and nurseries, Social Work Children’s Services and Social work Criminal Justice.
Eligibility, qualifications and skills
* Minimum of two Highers (grade A–C) or equivalent, or currently studying to attain this level
* Minimum of four National 5 awards including English and Mathematics (grade A–C)
* Interest in pursuing a career in financial administration or accountancy
* Numerical competence, enthusiasm, confidence and outgoing nature
* Ability to research and analyse information, prioritise and manage workload and examination commitments
* Good communication and ICT skills; ability to work on own initiative or as part of a team

You will be required to become a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme member through Disclosure Scotland and obtain a satisfactory membership check prior to commencing in this role.
