Offer description

This two-year Electronic & Communications Engineering Graduate Scheme offers structured technical training, hands-on experience, and the opportunity to work across cutting-edge systems that keep the UK rail network moving safely and reliably. You’ll be contributing to sustainable engineering outcomes and helping the railway transition toward Net Zero through modern, digital infrastructure.

The scheme provides the foundation, experience, and support needed to progress towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Key Criteria:

* A minimum 2:2 degree in an IET-accredited Electronic, Electrical, Telecoms, or Communications Engineering discipline
* Eligibility to work and travel within the UK for the duration of the scheme
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Clear interest in signalling, telecoms, SCADA, control systems and digital railway technology
* Confident communication skills, able to explain technical concepts clearly
* Ability to build effective relationships and collaborate with colleagues at all levels
* Strong time-management, organisation and self-motivation
* Adaptability and a willingness to work across varied placements and environments
* Commitment to pursuing IEng or CEng professional accreditation
* Logical thinking, creativity and a proactive approach to engineering challenges

What You’ll Be Doing

Your journey begins with a business familiarisation period, giving you broad exposure to how the railway operates across engineering, operations and safety functions. This foundation leads into structured placements within the electronic and communications discipline.

During the scheme, you will:

* Rotate across a range of electronic and communications engineering placements
* Support major investment projects and modernisation programmes
* Learn how digital and control systems are designed, assessed, maintained and renewed
* Build hands-on experience in key areas such as:
* Rail signalling systems
* Telecoms networks and infrastructure
* SCADA and power distribution control systems
* Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams

Professional Development

You’ll be supported with:

* Registration with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), with costs covered
* Structured placements tailored to your chosen technical areas
* Quarterly and annual reviews with your Mentor to track your progress
* Four technical training modules, covering engineering principles, digital systems and your specialist pathways
* Leadership modules to support long-term career development

After completing the two-year scheme, you will move into your first engineering appointment, continuing your journey toward IEng or CEng status.
