About the role

A really exciting opportunity has arisen within Legal and Democratic Services to work right at the heart of the Council’s most important projects and initiatives. This is a permanent role as a legal assistant supporting the lawyers dealing with contracts and procurement and regulatory and environment matters as part of the Economy and Project legal team. Legal Services performs a vital function at the centre of the local authority providing corporate advice to the Council, advice to members and officers, and ensures the probity and legality of Council's decisions or actions. We aim to be enabling and supportive, professional and objective, but also constructively challenging where necessary.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and capable legal assistant to join our busy team. dealing with a broad range of areas of local authority law. You will support the lawyers in the team in their work dealing with contracts, procurement legislation and subsidy control, and provide support to the lawyers undertaking property work in respect of the Council’s estates assets. You will also have opportunities to work with lawyers undertaking planning, highways and housing legal work as required by the needs of the service. This may involve, drafting simple agreements and dealing with amendments to draft documents, processing and registering documents, liaising with the Land Registry, internal clients and external third parties and legal representatives and supporting lawyers in relation to research into policies, procedures, legislation and case law.

About you

The successful applicant will need to be a confident communicator with the ability to solve problems in a pragmatic and timely way with some experience of working in a legal environment. You must also be able to work both independently and as part of a professional team, with excellent client care and IT skills and be able to manage conflicting priorities to deadlines.

This role is expected to have an ‘occasional’ office working status, with the expectation of a physical presence on site in Shropshire for a small number of days each month.
