Biomedical Scientist role at NHS (Band 5) – Poundbury Cancer Institute, a histopathology laboratory located in Poundbury, Dorchester. The role involves ensuring the service runs smoothly by assisting histopathologists and lab staff in various areas of the cellular pathology lab.
Job details: Band 5, Permanent, Full-time. Salary: £33,159 to £39,966 per year. Location: Newborough House, 3 Queen Mother Square, Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 3BJ.
Job Responsibilities
* Staff: The post holder will play a key role in the day-to-day scientific and technical operations in the department without direct supervision and within defined limits by following departmental SOPs.
* Support the role of senior colleagues and provide cover in their absence.
* Train and develop all subordinate staff and new staff during day-to-day operations according to local policies and procedures as directed by senior staff.
* Carry out support staff competency assessments to meet ISO 15189 requirements.
* Maintain and comply with the requirements of HCPC registration.
* Ensure efficient planning and prioritisation of individual workload.
* Supervise subordinate staff as necessary.
* Handle patient tissue samples and record associated clinical details as delegated by the Consultant Histopathologist.
* Assist in testing and evaluating new methodologies and instrumentation and contribute to the review process of SOPs under the direction of senior staff and according to PCI policies.
* Assist in research activity, service development and clinical audit undertaken by the department.
* Laboratory: Manage all aspects of patient tissue sample reception, interpretation of anatomical site and clinical details, assigning case numbers and preparing samples for dissection according to SOPs.
* Cooperate with Consultant Histopathologists and other technical staff during dissection of tissue samples; provide decision making and technical advice on tissue sample suitability for histological examination.
* Process and embed tissue samples in paraffin, change processing reagents, program and calibrate the tissue processor equipment; ensure correct anatomical orientation during embedding.
* Produce high-quality tissue sections on slides using microtomes for microscopical diagnosis.
* Perform staining/dying of slides using SOPs to render samples suitable for microscopy and diagnosis.
* Demonstrate and visualize antigen sites and tumour markers through Immunocytochemical techniques; possess knowledge of primary antibodies used in these investigations.
* Replenish stock supplies of reagents, chemicals, stains and dyes as needed.
* Maintain/repair specialist equipment; staff to undertake routine maintenance and troubleshooting as required.
* Quality: Ensure the standard of individual work meets Internal Quality Control values. Participate in National External Quality Assessment Scheme preparations and assessments.
* Ensure specialist equipment functions efficiently through maintenance and troubleshooting; communicate errors or faults to senior staff; be familiar with contingencies for equipment or system failure.
* Maintain high professional competence and skill in all tests and investigations; initiate corrective actions where QC indicates loss of performance.
* Report unusual results, incidents, complaints and anomalies promptly using the Quality Management System; maintain ISO 15189 compliance and participate in SOP reviews and updates.
* Carry out method validation and verification; ensure records are up-to-date and stored safely as required by ISO 15189:2012.
* IT: Comply with policies for safe, secure and confidential handling of patient and laboratory information; use the Laboratory Information System (LIMS) per authorised protocols; check and correct information input by other staff; use PCI IT systems following PCI policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
* Experience — Essential: Post-registration experience in Histopathology; competent in all benches (cut-up, IHC and molecular); evidence of regular CPD; experience with quality management systems; experience with ISO15189 accreditation processes; experience with a relevant LIMS system.
* Desirable: Research projects.
* Skills — Essential: Good interpretative skills at bench/analytical level; competence in a wide range of complex laboratory procedures; ability to organise and supervise less qualified staff; effective communication with peers, senior staff and other health care professionals at an appropriate level; ability to plan day-to-day work; ability to train and support staff; accurate, well-developed technical skills and manual dexterity; keyboard skills; support staff wellbeing; ability to work as part of a team and independently.
* Qualifications — Essential: HCPC state registration in Histopathology with post-registration training.
* Desirable: Progress towards higher degree or equivalent qualification.
Other Requirements
* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required as part of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975 exceptions order; submission to DBS to check for convictions.
