Assistant Technical Officer Blood Transfusion
Band 2 (NHS AfC). Permanent, Full‑time – 37.5 hrs per week. Working 24/7 rota, including night shifts and weekends.
Job Overview
Join the Blood Bank Department in Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. ATOs support Biomedical Scientists in the examination of clinical samples and perform other essential duties that keep the department running efficiently. The role offers full training and supervision.
Key Responsibilities
* Book and process Group and Save blood samples and other product requests.
* Operate analysers, centrifuges and related equipment in accordance with national methods.
* Monitor fridge temperatures and maintain equipment standards.
* Drive the on‑site Blood Bank vehicle to various hospital sites in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.
* Perform basic maintenance checks and report low stock levels to senior staff.
* Prepare samples for analysis (uncapping, centrifugation, aliquoting, bar‑coding).
* Ensure samples match worklists, correct patient ID, and adequate volume before testing.
* Enter test results into the Pathology computer system for BMS authorisation.
* Report rejected samples or issues to senior BMS promptly.
Qualifications & Experience
* GCSE 9‑4 (A‑C) Maths & English.
* NVQ level 2 in business administration, related subject or equivalent experience.
* Full clean driving licence with at least 2 years of driving experience.
* Proven knowledge of blood and blood products, assays performed, and Health & Safety legislation.
* IT proficiency (keyboard, basic software use).

* Attention to detail and safety awareness in a biological risk environment.
* Willingness to work flexible and in shift pattern, including night and weekend hours.
