As a Graduate P&C engineer, you will assist in the preparation of project documentation working on live substation projects under the guidance of senior engineers. Working for clients such as National Grid, Scottish Power, and Scottish & Southern Energy you will be responsible in part for producing project documentation used on live projects, contributing to major infrastructure projects across the country.
Responsibilities
* Assist in the design process of live projects, creating electrical schematics, grid plan layouts, lighting system layouts, protection and controls and site facility designs.
* Perform calculations required for substation design, including busbar short‑circuit, cable sizing, voltage drop, DC battery sizing and LVAC cable sizing.
* Support the development of protection philosophy documents such as key line diagrams and single line diagrams.
* Help set up electrical CAD/BIM configuration and procedures at the start of each project.
* Prepare engineering drawings from rough sketches or general engineering information using CAD/BIM software.
* Produce detailed design layouts, earthing layouts and other drawing production work, applying feedback from senior engineers.
* Apply standard techniques for sizing system components, e.g., LVAC Multi‑core cables.
* Keep abreast of CAD/BIM technology developments, BIM standards and codes of practice.
* Assist with changes to designs or sketches, evaluating impact on timelines and cost.
* Collaborate with Project Managers, BIM Managers, Engineers and Designers across multi‑disciplinary teams and use BIM models to resolve design or drawing issues.
* Analyze reports, drawings and tests to plan and design projects.
* Apply applicable design codes and specifications.
* Review design drawings for quality assurance within scope, budget and schedule, and perform tasks within allocated hours.
* Organise and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and related information.
* Work under guidance of senior engineers on HV substation topics such as underground cable design, busbar arrangements, protection & control systems and earthing arrangements.
* Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and other legal or regulatory requirements for electrical system design.
* Demonstrate creativity, foresight and judgement in anticipating and solving problems.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, engineering or construction technology, or currently pursuing a similar qualification.
* Basic ability to use 2D and 3D applications to produce engineering drawings.
* Fundamental knowledge of the theory and practices of the engineering discipline and the capability to operate design software relevant to the assigned discipline.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with keen attention to detail.
Desirable (But Not Essential)
* Basic understanding of design software such as AutoCAD, Revit and Excel, and ability to learn new design software quickly.
* Knowledge of Navisworks and Dynamo.
* Familiarity with BIM 360 and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
* Basic knowledge of BS1192 & ISO19650 standards and guidance for BIM Level 2 delivery.
* Basic knowledge of BIM Standards and industry guidance on electronic output.
