Responsibilities

Clinical: Act as the Consultant responsible for the day-to-day working of the HSCT Unit, supervising resident doctors undergoing specialist training and nurse specialists, and participating in examining and assessing the children on a daily basis, organising routine and specialised investigations and liaising with different departments such as microbiology, haematology, blood transfusion, pathology, radiology, genetics, cytogenetics and immunology. Lead in recognition and treatment of the complications of HSCT when they occur. Lead the multidisciplinary team of doctors, specialist nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists and physiotherapists to create / further develop systems of care dedicated to the management of children undergoing HSCT, in keeping with the general philosophy of the Unit. Plan each child\'s treatment, including co-ordination of the identification and work-up of HSCT donors, involving extensive collaboration with National and International bone marrow registries.

The post-holder will be responsible for co-ordinating the writing and implementation of HSCT protocols according to European guidelines. Manage HSCT follow-up programme, including development with the HSCT liaison team of clinics of children discharged post HSCT in GNCH and further afield. Update the protocols for all aspects of care of children undergoing HSCT. Work closely with consultant colleagues within the department to ensure excellence and continuity of consultant led care.

Contribute to 1:5 out-of-hours on call rota, including weekends. Administrative: Undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of patients and in relation to the running of the Department of Paediatric Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, in co-operation with the Head of Department, Directorate Manager, and Clinical Director. Undertake general administrative duties within a context of compliance with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives. Become involved with the financial management of the Department - at all times looking to ensure the delivery of high quality care to agreed standards, but at the same time reviewing working practices to provide the most efficient use of resources.

Research (Within the Newcastle University Translational and Clinical Research Institute): Newcastle is regarded as a leading international centre for research, innovation and training in the field of HSCT for Primary Immunodeficiency. The post-holder will take a lead role in further development of clinical research presenting at National and International meetings and publishing findings. The Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high-profile activity that complements and enriches the service provided. For clinical studies within the remit of the National Institute of Health Research Portfolio, the GNCH is well-supported by a Research Unit including CLRN-funded Research Nurses and Data Managers.

In addition, the co-situated Newcastle University Medical School provides a full range of biomedical research facilities. We currently recruit to a wide portfolio of observational studies and clinical trials across the fields of Paediatric Immunology / Stem Cell Transplantation / Infectious Diseases / Allergy. The post-holder will be expected to support our active participation in national and international studies in the field of Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases, and will be well-placed to pursue opportunities to: - Spearhead crosscutting research. - Secure funding for further studies.

Teaching and Training: Supervise the working of the Specialist Registrars and Specialist Doctor on the Unit. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of HSCT to all levels of paediatric trainees and visiting doctors from other centres. Active involvement in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees in the department. Participate in the teaching and training of any other health care professionals within the Directorate. Contribute to national training within subspecialty, especially for events hosted at Newcastle. Keep up-to-date with Trust / Deanery procedures required for teaching and training.

Managerial: Participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance, making a significant contribution to multidisciplinary audit. Contribute to the general organisation and running of the paediatric HSCT Unit within the Trust, working in collaboration with colleagues. Work towards mandatory JACIE Accreditation (Joint Accreditation Committee-ISCT (Europe) & EHSCT) of the Unit inspections. Newcastle is an active collaborator in a pan-European project on the treatment of Primary Immunodeficiency disorders and the post-holder works with the Data Managers to collate and submit data following the patients\' progress for contribution to National and International registries. Clinical Governance: The post-holder will need to lead the preparation for JACIE inspections.

Continued Medical Education (CME): Undergo CME in accordance with guidelines, undergo annual appraisal and job plan review. It is expected that objectives within job plan reviews will be based on Trust objectives such as fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 42 week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays. It is a condition of employment that all employees minimise the risk of infection and adhere to Trust policies on infection prevention and control, attend Trust Induction Programmes, include infection prevention and control as part of personal/professional development, and take responsibility to embed infection prevention in daily practice.

Participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance, contributing to multidisciplinary audit and risk management within the Childrens Services Directorate. Provide a major contribution to NHSLA assessments. Assist the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director in timely investigation of complaints and contribute to the general organisation and running of Childrens Services within the Trust.
