The General Practice Assistant (GPA) plays a key role in supporting General Practitioners (GPs) by contributing to the efficient and effective running of clinical servicesby handling routine administration and some basic clinical dutieson behalf of the GP,freeing up their time to focus on the patient.
The GPAis responsible formaintaininga high standard of communication in all interactions, including daily contact with patients, clinicians, and wider practice staff. Professionalism, accuracy, and a patient-centred approach are essential in all aspects of the role.
Where the post holder holds a recognised GP Assistant Certificate Qualification, they may also undertake a range of routine clinical tasks within their scope of competence, such as phlebotomy and electrocardiograms (ECGs),assistingin minor surgery clinics, in line with practice protocols and training.

Main duties of the job
Prioritise and organise administrative work generated byhospitals, Primary Care Organisations, patients etc, and to share workload withother administrative staff as necessary.
Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow upappointments of patient.
Communicate effectively with patients and carers,recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
Complete simple clinical observations/investigations asdirected locally, such as dipstick urine, bloodpressure, BMIs ECG and phlebotomy
To maintain accurate clinical records inconjunction with extant legislation
To liaise with external services/agencies to ensure thepatient is supported appropriately (vulnerable patients etc.)
Support the delivery of QOF, incentive schemes, QIPP andother quality or cost effectiveness initiatives
To deliver opportunistic health promotionwhere appropriate and support patients to adopt health promotionstrategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care
Review all incoming correspondence and enter, using readcodes, pertinent information into the patients electronic medicalrecording accordance with the coding protocol.
Organise the medical record of patients whom you are coding,to harmonise problem titles, group symptom development and assignthe appropriate status to medical information

About us
We are a 4 partner and 3 salaried GP training practice,working from purpose-built premises in the pleasant mid Norfolk market town ofEast Dereham. Just twenty minutes drive from Norwich, we are also within easyreach of Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds, and Ipswich. The practice is currentlypart of Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board.
Our surgery team comprises a full complement ofancillary staff, together with attached Community Nurses, Midwives and HealthVisitor.
We are fully computerised, using TPP SystmOne networkwith integrated Appointment System together with an extensive suite ofancillary Microsoft (and other) programmes.
We are a training practice, and we regularly havemedical students in the practice as a result of the collaborative work betweenourselves and the UEA Medical School. We also host trainee doctors during theirrotation and Cambridge medical students. All staff and partners are encouragedto attend external courses and we hold our own in-house sessions on a regularbasis for all staff. Attendance at thebi-monthly in-house training is mandatory for all staff and doctors (even if itfalls on a day when you would not normally work).

Job responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the GPA. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
To liaise with patients, the public and other healthcare professionals as necessary.
To be proficient at prioritising and organising administrative work generated by hospitals, Health Authority, Primary Care Organisations, patients etc., and to share workload with other administrative staff as necessary.
To receive incoming and initiate outgoing telephone calls to deal with appropriate queries.
Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patient.
Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
Complete simple clinical observations/investigations as directed locally, such as dipstick urine, blood pressure, BMIs ECG and phlebotomy
Develops extended clinical responsibilities following appropriate training such as NHS health checks. There may also be opportunities to train into enhanced duties such as Minor Surgery Assistant, depending upon service demand and individual capability.
To support in the implement vaccination programmes for adults and children
Contribute to public health campaigns - flu clinics through advice or direct care, including opportunistic health promotional programmes
To be instrumental in the support of the Infection Prevention Control lead and to work to the IPC requirements by providing audits, training, support and evidence of compliance to the practice manager
To assess the needs of patients ensuring the provision of healthcare is appropriate, incorporating evidence-based practice
To maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation
To support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies
To liaise with external services/agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately - vulnerable patients etc.
To delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately - ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual
To support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters, in accordance with local and national policies
Support the delivery of QOF, incentive schemes, QIPP and other quality or cost effectiveness initiatives
Recognise own knowledge limits and seek advice from clinical or administrative colleagues as appropriate.
To provide cover for members of the administrative team during periods of sickness and annual leave.
To deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate and support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care
Review all incoming correspondence and enter, using read codes, pertinent information into the patients electronic medical recording accordance with the coding protocol. This will include data highlighted by clinicians as well as data required to meet contractual obligations.
Organise the medical record of patients whom you are coding, to harmonise problem titles, group symptom development and assign the appropriate status to medical information
Ensure all clinical procedures are carried out safely, following practice protocols and infection prevention guidelines
Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
In addition to the primary key responsibilities, the GPA may be requested to:
Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
Support and participate in shared learning within the practice in order to improve patient care
Participate in the review of significant and near-miss events applying a structured approach ,i.e. root cause analysis
Support the practice team with the reviewing and implementation of practice policies and protocols, ensuring conformance to extant legislation
