Great British Energy - Nuclear’s first step was to start the technology selection process for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in 2023. SMRs can potentially be quicker to deploy and less expensive to build than traditional nuclear power plants because they are smaller, have factory based modular manufacturing and more flexible deployment options. In June 2025, Great British Energy - Nuclear announced that Rolls-Royce SMR had been selected as the preferred bidder to build the UK’s first SMRs, following a technology selection process that began in 2023.

Job Profile:
The Configuration Management (CM) Engineer is part of the Digital Delivery function, reporting to the Configuration Management Lead. You will be responsible for the following project configuration management activities:
* Implementation of the CM Plan,
* Working to and enhancing CM processes and procedures,
* Performing oversight of suppliers CM,
* Providing CM training and guidance to individuals involved in the CM process,
* Establishing baselines of structured and linked product configuration information,
* Ensuring configuration changes are of acceptable quality and efficiently expedited,
* Producing status reports to meet project needs, and
* Embracing the implementation and use of modern digital tools and information management good practices.
You will form part of the establishment of a major programme. This will provide you with an opportunity to be part of a team ensuring successful delivery of a First of a Kind (FOAK) SMR Project, helping to ensure it minimises its environmental impact whilst delivering cost-effective energy capacity for the UK. Whilst this is a fast-paced and exciting challenge, you will need to be comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and change.
Responsibilities:
* Play a key role in supporting the Configuration Management Lead bring the CM Plan and supporting processes and procedures to life.
* Deliver CM activities across the SMR Project scope and support improvements to processes, procedures, ways of working, and tools that deliver consistency and quality of product configuration information throughout the lifecycle.
* Proactively engage with stakeholders to establish and maintain configuration baselines of approved and accepted product configuration information.
* Support Licensing and Permitting, and Safety, Security, Safeguards and Environment case development through accurate configuration records and management of change.
* Lead GBE-N configuration control activities ensuring all proposed changes are registered, assessed, sentenced, implemented, verified and the associated baselines maintained.
* Act as Secretary and provide support to members of the Configuration Control Board.
* Maintain configuration status records and produce data-based status reports against Key Performance Indicators, and that identify areas for improvement in the performance of CM or process.
* Provide training and guidance to build confidence in how CM is implemented across the SMR Project.
* Support regular configuration reviews (data accuracy) and audits (process effectiveness) that identify areas of conformance and non-conformance and raise associated remedial actions.
* Contribute to the administration, implementation, maintenance and integration of engineering and information management tools and processes ensuring alignment with CM needs.
* Conduct or oversee the performance of physical and functional configuration audits to verify compliance of physical items to approved, accepted and baselined product configuration information.
* Contribute to the successful delivery of digital tools that assist the SMR Project manage the complexities and volume of information typical to nuclear projects.
* Work in conjunction with information management team members to ensure the accuracy of product configuration information.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
* Typically, 2–5+ years in CM within nuclear, aerospace, defence, or similarly regulated industries.
* Proven track record of performing CM in complex, multi-disciplinary projects with stringent regulatory requirements.
* Knowledge of the application of CM functions and related processes and procedures.
* Proficiency in implementing and using CM tools (e.g., Teamcenter, Windchill or similar) and information management tools (e.g. A-Site, ProjectWise) with a forward-looking approach to adopting emerging technologies.
* Familiarity with of CM standards (e.g., ISO 10007, EIA 649, Def-Stan 05-057) and their principles.
* Familiarity with industry guidance on the application of CM in the nuclear context (e.g. IAEA-TECDOC-1335, INPO AP929).
* Awareness of nuclear regulations, quality assurance frameworks, and compliance requirements.
* Knowledge of document and digital centric approaches to CM is beneficial.
* Knowledge of Information Management (e.g. ISO19650) and Systems Engineering and Systems Lifecycles (ISO 15288) is beneficial.
* Experience of software configuration management and associated tools (e.g. GIT, GitLab) and concepts such as variant management is beneficial.
* The capability to embrace change and uncertainty and welcome the emergent aspect of the job.
* Ability to work in a collaborative, multi-party environment at pace.
* Experience with SMR or large-scale nuclear projects is highly desirable.
Qualifications:
* Certification in Configuration Management (CMII / CM2) (desirable).
* Certification in project management (PMP, PRINCE2) or systems engineering (INCOSE CSEP) (desirable).
* Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline (desirable).
