The Village Grocer Crawley operates in a truly unique retail environment unlike traditional suburban or city supermarkets. Situated right on a bustling university campus, our customer base is made up primarily of students, academic professionals, and university staff. This vibrant and fast-paced community demands quick, convenient, and high-quality food solutions especially fresh, ready-to-eat meals.
Over 60% of our total sales come from our Deli section, which highlights the critical importance of this area to our business. Our store serves a diverse and fast paced university community, so a strong focus on both grocery and dairy sections is essential. These areas are equally important to our success students and staff rely on us for everything from quick snacks and daily essentials to fresh dairy and drinks.
Village Grocer Crawley, part of WA’s independent supermarket scene, is seeking a dynamic and results driven Store Manager to take ownership of the entire store operation. About the Role
As Store Manager, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering a standout retail experience. Your leadership will inspire a high-performing team to consistently provide top-tier customer service and fresh, delicious food. We’re not just looking for a retailer we want a leader who’s passionate about food, engaged with the local community, and ready to take this store to the next level.
This is a full-time position based on campus.
Key Responsibilities
* Take full accountability for the store’s day-to-day operations.
* Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing team with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style.
* Deliver outstanding customer experiences every customer, every time.
* Manage store financials including sales, Gross Profit (GP), budgets, and wage costs.
* Maintain a high standard of merchandising that reflects the vibrancy of our university location.
* Uphold rigorous food safety and health & safety standards.
* Drive store performance through smart stock control, targeted promotions, and a deep understanding of the campus community's needs.
* Oversee both front-of-house (service and presentation) and back-of-house (inventory and administration) functions.
* Communicate effectively across all levels from your team and customers to senior leadership.
What You’ll Bring
* Proven experience managing a retail store supermarket background highly preferred.
* Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, mentor, and inspire teams.
* Solid financial management experience (GP, sales, budgets, wages).
* A genuine passion for customer service and fresh food retail.
* Eye for merchandising and creating a visually compelling in-store experience.
* Deep knowledge of food safety compliance and fresh food handling.
* Experience with deli and gourmet food offerings is a major advantage.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills.
* Proficiency in relevant systems, including Microsoft Office and retail management platforms like Smart Retail or ABCIS.
