Job overview

We are currently looking to recruit a Porter working 37.5 hours per week over 5 days out of 7 based at The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

The post holder being expected to provide cover for colleagues during periods of absence.

Based at the above siteand providing an efficient day to day Portering service for patients, service users transferring patients and all manner of stock items to and from all departments across the site.

Portering Services provides a 24 hours, 7 day a week service across all trust sites.

The successful candidates will have good numeracy and communication skills, a reliable worker and be flexible in their availability to work all manner of shifts in any 24 hour period.

Previous experience of working in a similar environment would be beneficial, but full training will be provided.

This role requires the post holder to work in areas that are used for the care of Coronavirus (Covid19) positive patients.

Candidates are required to show their original qualification certificates to the interview panel.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the site porter team, you will undertake a wide range of duties as directed by the Porter Supervisors / Hotel Services Officers.

Providing an efficient day to day Portering service for patients, service users transferring patients and all manner of stock items to and from all departments across the site.

To support the provision of clinical services throughout the Trust, undertaking the movement of patient’s goods and waste as required. Using vehicles, powered movers and equipment as directed.

Portering Services provides a 24 hours, 7 day a week service across all trust sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key results from the job holder

As a member of the site porter team, you will undertake a wide range of duties as directed by the Porter Supervisors / Hotel Services Managers.

You are required to undertake the movement of patients and goods as required. Using vehicles, powered movers and equipment as directed.

Support the provision of clinical services to Wards and Departments.

Planning and Organisational Duties

* Undertakes daily tasks as requested by Porter Supervisor, Wards and Departments.
* Movement of patients including the deceased, by bed chair or trolley.
* Movement of goods, eg mail, medical gasses, pharmacy items, samples, dirty linen & waste.
* Satisfactory performance of duties as laid down in Department Operational Policies, in accordance with approved methods, frequencies and standards.
* Use of equipment and machinery as directed.
* Use of electrical/conventional vehicles as directed.

Communications and Key Working Relationships

* Adopt a flexible approach when undertaking Porter duties as part of the hospital support team.
* Prompt response to radio or bleep calls.
* Routine communication with patients hospital staff and public.
* Compliance with Trust and Local procedures.

Responsibility for Finance

* May be required to secure buildings.
* Keep personal equipment secure at all times e.g bleeps/radios.
* Compliance with Trust and Local procedures.

Responsibility for Human Resources

* Demonstrate own duties to new starters.
* Attend courses as directed, ensure compliance with mandatory training.
* Compliance with Trust and Local procedures.
* Complete timesheet or work record.

Responsibility for Health & Safety

* Responsible for ensuring own safety at work.
* Report any equipment defects to Supervisors.
* Significant manual handling required, eg. Patients, trolleys, waste bins, cages.
* Reports accidents at work and defects with machinery and buildings to the Porter Supervisor.
* Act as part of the Fire Response/Major Incident response team.
* Compliance Trust and Local procedures.

Person specification

Additional

* Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
* Working unsociable hours
* Flexibility to provide cover for colleagues
* Responsive to service need
* Contactable “out of hours”

Knowledge

* A general understanding of why Portering Services are important to patient care

Qualifications

* No formal qualifications are required: an induction period, on the job instruction and additional training will be provided on use of equipment/machinery, infection control and manual handling.
* NVQ level 1 or equivalent

Experience

* Previous Experience is not required but is appreciated
* Customer Services background

Skills

* Basic literacy and numeracy required
* Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with a range of people including service users
* Ability to organise & prioritise day to day tasks
* Ability to be flexible and work across a range of departments and areas
* Previous experience of mechanical equipment
