The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence. Our research plays a key role in tackling many global challenges, from reducing our carbon emissions to developing vaccines during a pandemic.

The Department of Psychiatry is based on the Warneford Hospital site in Oxford – a friendly, welcoming place of work with an international reputation for excellence. The Department has a substantial research programme, with major funding from Medical Research Council (MRC), Wellcome Trust and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and provides highly rated medical training in psychiatry. The Head of Department is Professor Belinda Lennox.

The Centre for Eudaimonia & Human Flourishing (CEHF), led by Professor Morten Kringelbach, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join its interdisciplinary programme in contemplative science, computational neuroscience, and human flourishing.

About the Role

The post is funded for 36 months and is based in the Department of Psychiatry at the CEHF at Stoke House.

You will lead a programme of research in contemplative science, computational neuroscience, and AI, managing research resources and budgets while developing ideas for generating research income. You will supervise and mentor students and research staff, providing guidance on methods, analysis, and career development. You will also conduct cutting‑edge research, integrating first‑person reports with behavioural and neuroimaging data, developing MATLAB/Python pipelines for fMRI whole‑brain models, preparing high‑quality manuscripts and visualisations, and overseeing ethical approvals and participant recruitment as required.

About You

You will have or be close to the completion of a PhD/DPhil in computational neuroscience with experience in contemplative practice and knowledge of meditation traditions. You have a proven track record in interdisciplinary research, combining computational modelling, whole‑brain fMRI analyses, altered states of consciousness, and information‑theoretic approaches. Experience in modelling neural dynamics of neuropsychological disorders, supervising students, and using advanced fMRI methodologies (including transcranial electric stimulation) is essential. Expertise in integrating behavioural, phenomenological, and neuroimaging data, the ability to manage research and administrative tasks independently, and an educational background in engineering or physics would be desirable.

Diversity

Committed to equality and valuing diversity

Our active Psychiatry People and Culture teams and initiatives including our values and behaviours framework, work to make the Department of Psychiatry as supportive, welcoming and inclusive as possible.

Application Process
