Consultant in Paediatric Cardiology

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist to join our expanding and highly motivated team. This post offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued development of a high-quality, patient‑centred paediatric cardiology service across both tertiary and regional settings.
The successful candidate will deliver a broad range of clinical activity, including outpatient cardiology clinics, inpatient care, participation in service weeks, and on‑call provision, alongside active involvement in multidisciplinary team (MDT) working. The role will also support the delivery of peripheral clinics, ensuring equitable access to specialist cardiology services across the region.

Main duties of the job
As part of the paediatric cardiology service, the post holder will be expected to participate in all aspects of the service, including the care of inpatients within the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) and on the neonatal unit situated on the St Michaels Hospital site.
* Attendance at Joint Cardiac Conference (JCC) twice weekly
* Attendance at Grand Rounds with the paediatric cardiology team
* On service cardiologist – short‑term responsibility (for one week at a time) for all cardiac inpatients and consultation with the patients designated cardiologist/cardiac surgeon as appropriate
* On call evening and weekend service as part of a rota
* Regular paediatric cardiology clinics at BRHC
* Attendance at relevant MDMs
* Attendance and participation at Cardiac Governance and Business meetings
* Outpatient sessions at tertiary peripheral clinic/clinics
Qualifications & Training
* Fully registered with GMC
* Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview
* Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications
* Must be on the GMCs Specialist Register for Paediatric Cardiology to start Consultant appointment
* Higher academic qualification e.g. MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent
Experience
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Paediatric Cardiology
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
* Up‑to‑date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
* Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance and Audit
* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
* Recent record of clinical governance, audit, or quality improvement project
* Positive approach to evidence‑based practice
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation
Research
* Knowledge of the principals involved in research
* Evidence of participation and contribution in clinical research
* Evidence of peer review research papers and presentations/posters at academic meetings
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department
Teaching and Training
* Experience of teaching medical students
* Experience of supervising trainees
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team
* Formal teaching qualification
* Training in providing feedback, supervising and supporting trainees
* Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
* Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
* Ability to practice independently as a consultant
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
* Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures
* Evidence of experience in setting up a new service or improving an existing one, by encouraging collaboration and engagement of a multi‑disciplinary team
Interpersonal, communication and team working skills
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
