As the Recycling and Waste Management Officer, you will work as part of a team in the development, promotion and implementation of recycling and waste minimisation services. You will help to ensure the statutory duties and council policies in relation to street cleanliness are effectively and professionally discharged.
The work you deliver will reach every household in our area and help us to achieve our ambitious recycling targets of 68% by 2027 and 70% by 2030.
What you will be doing
* As part of the Recycling and Waste Management team, you will monitor the council’s waste contractor, undertaking check list inspections of Sort It Centres, checking health and safety arrangements and completing quality checks of collection arrangements and vehicles.
* You will prepare communication material and engage with residents to inform, educate, issue advice and monitor changes, which will include attendance at a variety of events such as road shows and community meetings.
* It will be your responsibility to carry out educational and promotional programmes concerning waste, street cleansing and envirocrime to include schools, business and local communities and to develop and enforce the council’s policies around envirocrime.
* Responding to enquiries and investigating customer complaints you will ensure that the council’s statutory responsibilities are fulfilled or that powers are considered and may involve visits to customers to assess support and advice needed to make recommendations.
* Liaising with Place Community Officers, you will identify proactive actions in response to early signals of issues and make soft enforcement warnings or case referrals to the Enforcement team, updating database recording of case history.
What we need from you
* It is essential that you have experience in a waste environment, applying waste or street cleansing legislation, policies and procedures to everyday scenarios.
* Strong IT skills are a must, especially in using databases, Excel and PowerPoint and appropriate software such as Outlook or waste collection management systems and be able to maintain accurate reports and records.
* We require you to have experience of working as part of a team or as an individual to prioritise, plan, monitor and evaluate work and cases to meet service standard, targets and deadlines.
* Due to the nature of the role, you will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style for different audiences and be resilient to deal with members of the public, which is likely to involve situations of conflict and soft enforcement activity.
* You will have strong organisational skills with the ability to plan and deliver activities effectively and able to interpret information, sometimes conflicting, to identify issues that need to be addressed.
* Experience of setting up, adjusting and using technical equipment such as video cameras will be key to this role.
What you need to know
* You will be required to travel widely within the authority so you must either have a full, valid UK driving licence and provide a car or have access to appropriate means of travel.
* The role involves some evening and occasional weekend work to support engagement activities, which is shared across the team.
