Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the dynamic multi-disciplinary melanoma oncology team at the Christie. The Christie melanoma service provides specialist care and management for patients diagnosed with melanoma, and strives to improve patient care and outcomes through service development and clinical trial activity. The post holder will work alongside medical oncology consultants, clinical fellows and advanced practitioners caring for and helping to manage patients undergoing immunotherapy, targeted therapy and other novel treatments. This includes advice about symptom management and providing specialist information, support, co‑ordination of care both in the outpatient and inpatient settings.

Applications are welcomed from those with a nursing background and experience of nursing patients with melanoma and/or immunotherapy. Oncology nursing experience is also taken into account.

The post holder will be motivated and eager to improve the quality of patient care and the patient experience, with skills in service audit and innovation.


Main duties of the job

* Provide a comprehensive nursing service for patients suffering from melanoma through clinical practice, teaching and participation in research.
* Act as a resource for the multidisciplinary team.
* Develop the post according to service needs, agree targets for progress and demonstrate the positive effect of this patient care.
* Provide leadership and innovation in melanoma nursing.


Duties and responsibilities

* Provide specialist nursing expertise and advice to patients and carers within the field of melanoma.
* Act as point of contact for patients, carers and all members of the MDT, providing information and education as required.
* Provide emotional support from diagnosis onwards, ensuring continuity and consistency of care for patients and relatives.
* Work within clearly defined protocols and guidelines.
* Collaborate with all members of the MDT, both internally and externally, including referring hospitals, GPs, district nurses and specialist nurses across the region.
* Demonstrate initiative and vision in moving the service forward and developing standards and protocols for the management of this patient group.
* Develop holistic needs assessments and recovery packages to enable patients to live with and beyond cancer.
* Attend outpatient clinics ensuring that the needs of patients and carers are met.
* Initiate nurse‑led clinics when appropriate – either telephone or hospital‑based to support patients outside clinic appointments.
* Provide cross‑cover for the other nurse specialist within the melanoma MDT.
* Promote a culture that supports self‑management.
* Provide specialist education and training to other professionals within the MDT and to ward staff about melanoma and care of patients on systemic anti‑cancer treatment.
* Collate and record quantitative and qualitative data to provide evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality through audit and research.
* Lead on implementation and monitoring of adherence to relevant clinical guidelines.
* Actively participate in multi‑professional meetings, acting as patient advocate and representing nursing views.
* Act as a role model for excellent advanced communication skills and expertise.
* Demonstrate skills in conflict resolution and competent negotiation skills when dealing with difficult or challenging situations.
* Lead development of patient‑focused education, including training to self‑manage ongoing consequences of treatment.


Person Specification


Qualifications - Essential

* Registered General Nurse (RGN).
* Degree in Nursing or a health‑related subject, or equivalent experience.
* Post‑registration qualification in oncology.
* Non‑medical prescribing (NMP) qualification.
* Evidence of involvement in leadership, teaching and mentoring of learners.


Qualifications - Desirable

* Qualification in teaching and assessing.
* Master’s degree.
* Counselling certificate.
* Palliative care certificate.
* Nurse non‑medical prescribing qualification.


Experience - Essential

* Post‑registration with experience at a senior level.
* Broad range of clinical experience, including melanoma or a related area.
* Experience working with patients undergoing systemic anti‑cancer treatment.
* Participation in service development and implementation of change.


Experience - Desirable

* Project management.
* Experience influencing change.
* Experience working within a defined resource and ability to demonstrate imaginative and effective use of resources.


Skills - Essential

* Advanced communication skills.
* Ability to analyse data and provide written reports.
* Ability to work autonomously.
* Ability to present information to professional groups.
* Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues across health and social care settings.
* Strong organisational and prioritising skills.

Pay scheme: Agenda for change
Band: Band 7
Salary: £47,810 to £54,710 a year per annum pro rata
