Farm Technician (known internally as Land-based Industries Technician) £16.44 per hour Part time job share / 3 days a week / 8am to 4pm (days to be discussed at interview) Based on our beautiful farm on our Surrey Campus St. Piers is committed to safeguarding and protecting our students, and promotes the welfare of all learners. About Us St Piers School and College sits in the Education Directorate of Young Epilepsy, the leading national charity working exclusively to improve the lives of children and young people with epilepsy and associated conditions. St Piers is an innovative and creative non-maintained residential special school and college for children and young people aged 5-25 with epilepsy, autism, severe learning difficulties, speech, language, and communication needs, and sensory and/or physical needs. We work with young people to create personalised learning programmes appropriate to their individual needs and abilities. Our aim is to help them to fulfil realistic aspirations, achieve their goals, and develop meaningful and relevant skills for everyday life in society. Children and young people are put at the heart of the learning experience, through providing an environment where everyone can make progress and gain new skills. About The Job In this role you would be working with a range of farm animals, you will help to support the delivery of the farm curriculum with preparation of work areas for student learning and providing support to students as appropriate under the guidance of the Farm manager As required, under the supervision of the Farm Manager, to assist with the care of the animals, ensuring they are kept in good condition, complying with DEFRA and RSPCA requirements. To provide animal care and plant care when students are not in residence, including weekends/holidays (including Christmas and Bank Holidays) on a rota basis as agreed with the Farm Manager. To assist with out of hours emergencies involving the farm animals. To be available on a rota basis for support during the lambing season. To ensure that any animal sickness is reported to the Farm Manager and follow directions to ensure humane treatment of livestock. Maintain tidiness of the food store and report any shortages of feed and bedding to the Farm Manager. Maintain safety of farm equipment and tools. Maintenance and fencing repairs as needed. To ensure that reasonable bio-security measures are always in place. To ensure all areas of the farm and garden are kept clean, tidy and safe. Identifying areas that require improving or repairing and undertaking the necessary work, in agreement with the Farm Manager. To develop a planned preventative maintenance programme of the Farm area with the Farm Manager. To support regular checks of fence lines to maintain security of stock. To help to bring in the winter feed e.g. hay during hay season. Support with the development and delivery of practical learning activities and sessions. To undertake any necessary training to maintain own professional development and enhance job function. What we need from you Previous experience of working in an agricultural setting Animal welfare and breeding programmes – e.g. lambing and small animals.
