Purpose of Role
The Business Unit Commercial Manager provides strategic commercial leadership for an entire Business Unit within our defence portfolio. This senior position sets the commercial vision, drives profitable growth, and ensures rigorous financial and contractual governance across all operations. Operating as a key member of the Business Unit leadership team, the role shapes strategy, manages complex risk, and delivers long-term value for both client and organisation.
Job Description
Accountable for the end-to-end commercial agenda, the Business Unit Commercial Manager leads on commercial strategy, financial performance, and contractual compliance. You will influence executive decision-making, oversee high-value defence contracts, and safeguard sustainable profitability through strong governance and stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities
- Commercial Strategy & Leadership – Define and implement the Business Unit’s commercial strategy, aligning with corporate objectives and defence-sector requirements.
- Portfolio & Contract Management – Direct multi-site, high-value contracts (including NEC and JCT forms), ensuring optimal commercial outcomes and compliance.
- Financial & Risk Governance – Own the commercial P&L, embedding robust financial controls, risk management frameworks, and performance reporting.
- Executive Stakeholder Engagement – Cultivate senior relationships with clients, partners, and internal executives to drive collaboration and resolve strategic issues.
- Team & Capability Development – Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing commercial team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Essential Qualifications/Skills
- Extensive senior commercial management experience within a Tier-1 FM or defence contractor environment.
- Deep expertise in complex contract structures, including NEC and JCT, with a track record of successful negotiation and dispute resolution.
- Proven ability to lead commercial strategy across large, multi-site portfolios with significant annual revenues.
- Strong financial and analytical acumen, with demonstrated P&L responsibility.
- Exceptional executive-level stakeholder management, influencing, and negotiation skills.
- Degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Business, or a related field; professional membership (, RICS, CIPS) desirable.
