Offer description

Epidemiologists play essential roles in our teams.

In the midst of an outbreak, our project teams rely on our epidemiologists to understand where and how quickly a disease is spreading, and how it can be contained. From Ebola outbreaks in Liberia to predicting cholera outbreaks in Haiti after an earthquake, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) epidemiologists save lives.

Responsibilities

MSF epidemiologists work in various contexts, either based in country coordination centers or out in field projects. They may support one or multiple projects, focusing on issues such as mortality surveys and disease spread mapping.

The role is diverse, and you would be responsible for some or all of the following:

* Conducting community surveys
* Creating reports for project planning
* Planning responses to outbreaks, including active case finding, vaccination campaigns, WATSAN interventions (e.g., meningitis, measles, cholera), or mortality surveys
* Establishing surveillance systems in MSF hospitals or communities
* Building the capacity of medical teams to analyze and interpret data for evidence-based decisions

Role requirements

* Degree or Master’s Degree in Epidemiology, or an MPH with extensive epidemiology training
* Practical skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating epidemiological research methods
* Ability to develop and implement disease surveillance and data collection systems, including training others
* Proficiency with epidemiological database and statistical analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel and at least one statistical program)
* At least one year of experience working in a low- or middle-income country or similar environment
* Leadership skills to supervise, manage, and train team members
* Ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams
* Organizational skills to prioritize workload and use initiative when necessary
* Willingness to work in unstable environments
* Availability for up to nine months (with opportunities for shorter roles depending on current needs)
* Fluency in English

Assets

* Medical or biomedical background
* Familiarity with tropical and infectious diseases
* Previous experience with NGOs in similar roles
* Experience working in unstable environments

Languages

We are currently seeking epidemiologists who speak French or Arabic. Fluency in these languages increases your chances of being accepted onto our register. Language skills may be tested during recruitment.

Note: If you are not a passport holder of the country where the vacancy is located, you might need a work permit. For more information, check our Blog.
